Valdes-Scantling Betting Trends and Stats

Valdes-Scantling had a catch percentage of 51.9% last season, easily the lowest among all Chiefs players who had at least 20 receptions.

MVS Best Bet

With a career-high 42 receptions for 687 yards last season, Valdes-Scantling is the leading returning wide receiver on the Chiefs. And with the injury status of tight end Travis Kelce (knee) in the air, Patrick Mahomes will be looking for someone to catch the ball when he is throwing it all over the field.

But whether Valdes-Scantling is that main target or not is up for debate. As mentioned, he had a career-high 42 catches, but he was targeted 81 times, the third-most targets on the team last season. His catch percentage is barely above 50% for his career (50.3%), so his ability to catch the ball is certainly in question.

He does have the big-play capability, as evidenced by his 116-yard receiving performance on just six catches in the AFC Championship Game victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. And his career average of 17.2 yards per reception is impressive.

But even if Kelce is unable to go, the Chiefs appear to be deep at the wide receiver position, so whoever can catch the ball consistently Thursday will most likely become Mahomes’ favorite target in this game.

The Detroit Lions had one of the league’s worst pass defenses last season, ranking 30th in opponent passing yards per game (245.8), and their 7.9 opponent yards per pass attempt average was the second worst behind only the Bears (8.) in the NFL.

It seems betting on Valdes-Scantling is more of a 50/50 proposition than with any other player in this game. On one hand, one big catch from a Mahomes pass is all it will take for Valdes-Scantling to go over the total.

Now, do you believe Valdes-Scantling will actually catch that deep ball?

Best Bet: Marquez Valdes-Scantling under 40.5 receiving yards (-115 at DraftKings)
