Vikings Predicted To Trade for Pro Bowl QB After J.J. McCarthy’s Underwhelming Sophomore Season

A new trade proposal has the Minnesota Vikings targeting former first-rounder as pressure mounts on J.J. McCarthy after a rocky Year 2.

The Minnesota Vikings head into the 2026 offseason facing renewed questions at quarterback after J.J. McCarthy followed a difficult rookie year with an uneven sophomore campaign. A late five-game uptick helped the team finish 9-8, but concerns remain about his health, consistency, and ability to elevate the offense over a full season.

With the franchise aiming to return to playoff contention rather than accept another developmental year, one prominent ESPN offseason trade blueprint now projects Minnesota making a significant move: trading for former Pro Bowl quarterback Mac Jones to add real competition and potentially a new QB1 in 2026.

Proposed Trade Sets Up Mac Jones As QB1 for Vikings in 2026

In ESPN’s latest 2026 NFL trade projections, a proposed deal would send Jones from the San Francisco 49ers to the Vikings in a multi-pick package. Under that scenario, Minnesota would acquire Jones and a 2027 third-round pick, while San Francisco would receive a 2026 second-round pick plus additional conditional selections tied to Jones’ playing time and future with the Vikings.

The analysis notes that the former first-rounder “was a disaster for most of the season,” missing 24 games across his first two years because of knee, concussion, hand, and ankle injuries and struggling even when available.

Although McCarthy closed 2025 with a better five-game stretch, those outings came against defenses ranked 17th or worse in EPA per play against the pass, including a matchup where he attempted just 14 passes and another where he faced second- and third-stringers for most of the game. The piece concludes that Minnesota “can’t afford to leave McCarthy an uncontested path” to the job again.

Jones, by contrast, is coming off a rebound season in San Francisco. In his lone year with the 49ers, he posted a Total QBR of 62.3, roughly 10 points lower than Brock Purdy’s 73.0 but solid within Kyle Shanahan’s system. He is reportedly due approximately $4.7 million in 2026, the final year of his current contract, making him a relatively affordable addition for a team still sorting out its long-term plans under center.

The Vikings have already shown a willingness to bet on quarterbacks coming out of Shanahan’s “rejuvenation cycle,” having signed Sam Darnold after his stint in San Francisco before Darnold went on to win a Super Bowl with Seattle.

ESPN’s reporting has indicated the 49ers intend to keep Jones as Purdy’s backup, but Barnwell outlines how conditional compensation could entice them to move him if another team is willing to pay for a potential starter.

How Mac Jones Could Challenge J.J. McCarthy in Minnesota

The heart of the projection is competitive pressure. Even if McCarthy deserves more time after just 10 career starts, the Vikings need a legitimate alternative both for performance and durability reasons. McCarthy’s injury history, 24 missed games over two seasons, has left Minnesota repeatedly exposed at the most important position on the field.

Jones arrives with clear arguments in his favor. He has recent success in an elite offensive system, a proven baseline of efficiency, as reflected in his 62.3 Total QBR season with San Francisco, and experience navigating different schemes since entering the league as a first-round pick.

While he does not bring the same physical upside or draft pedigree within Minnesota’s own building as McCarthy, his track record is stronger than what the Vikings have seen so far from their younger passer.

If executed, the trade would set up a scenario in which McCarthy still has a path to keep the job, with a strong offseason and preseason, but Jones looms as a proven alternative ready to take over if performance or health issues reappear.
