When you think of Super Bowl champions, the star players are the ones that are top of mind, and there’s nothing wrong with that. That said, for most, it’s a grind to get to that level of stardom, and every player has his own story.

For some, their journey starts as a UDFA signing, elevating their status from unknown and cutting their teeth until the NFL gives them a chance to make a true impact. For others, they are gifted the opportunity via the draft. Both of these pathways start at rookie minicamp, and here is what you can expect on that front through the end of May.

When Is the Los Angeles Chargers’ Rookie Minicamp?

The first month of being a professional is pretty straightforward for the incoming rookie class. Each NFL team can elect to hold one three-day rookie minicamp in the two weeks coming out of the draft. This year, the earliest start date for those gatherings is Friday, May 2, and all clubs who choose to hold such an event will conclude it no later than Monday, May 12.

From there, the NFL has mandatory rookie football development programs. Those open on that Monday (May 12) and last for seven weeks, getting the new pros up to speed on how to succeed, on the field, at this level.

The rookies are run through drills at a walk-through pace, educated on how to physically transition to the NFL game, and guided through the resources at their disposal and the expectations that come from wearing the league shield (things like benefits, wellness checks, and an upholding of the league’s culture).

You’ll get another glimpse of these prominent figures at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere, an event held in Los Angeles that will take place on Wednesday, May 14 this year.
