Chargers RB Depth Chart: Examining Los Angeles’ Running Back Room After Landing Omarion Hampton in NFL Draft

The Los Angeles Chargers made an aggressive move in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft by selecting North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton with the No. 22 overall pick. It was a pick that not only gives the Bolts a potential star but also adds a twist to their already crowded backfield.

Now with five running backs on the roster, Los Angeles may have some tough decisions to make ahead of the season. Let’s break down the current Chargers RB depth chart and how Hampton fits into the group.

Chargers RB Depth Chart

Here’s a look at the projected RB depth chart following the addition of Hampton in Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Najee Harris

Najee Harris signed with the Chargers this offseason and figures to play a significant role early. His experience and physicality make him a natural fit in Jim Harbaugh’s offense. Expect Harris to get the initial nod as the starter, especially early in the season.

Omarion Hampton

The rookie out of North Carolina brings serious juice to the Chargers’ backfield. Hampton rushed for over 3,100 yards and 30 touchdowns across the past two seasons and offers an enticing blend of size, burst, and vision. He’s expected to share the workload right away and could eventually take over lead duties.

“Having amassed 3,164 yards and 30 touchdowns over the past two seasons, Hampton has the tools to be an impact starter as a volume back in the NFL,” PFN’s Ian Cummings wrote in his scouting report.

Hassan Haskins

Hassan Haskins could have an edge in the roster battle thanks to his connection with Harbaugh from their time together at Michigan. He’s a physical runner who can fill in as needed and provide solid depth.

Kimani Vidal

Kimani Vidal showed flashes last season but may face an uphill battle to earn consistent touches. Still, he offers value as a depth piece with some versatility.

Jaret Patterson

Jaret Patterson made just one appearance for the Chargers in 2024 and wasn’t originally drafted by the organization. He’s likely the odd man out in a deep group, especially with Hampton now in the mix.

What’s Next for the Chargers Backfield?

The addition of Omarion Hampton gives the Chargers a potential star to pair with Harris, but someone in the group will need to be moved or cut. Patterson appears to be the most expendable, but camp battles could shake things up.

Harbaugh’s offense is built on physicality and a strong run game, and now Los Angeles has two downhill runners who fit that mold. Expect a heavy dose of both Harris and Hampton this fall as the Chargers look to reestablish their identity under their new head coach.
