Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has been in the spotlight since the Week 16 matchup against the Detroit Lions, but not for the right reasons. He was involved in a controversial interaction with a fan, and while many players and experts have shared their opinions on who was at fault, the Lions have now released their verdict.
Lions Share Whether They’ll Take Action Against Fan Involved in DK Metcalf Incident
In the Week 16 clash against the Lions, the Steelers secured a 29–24 win. However, a fan-player interaction from the game became the most talked-about moment. During the incident, Metcalf was seen throwing a punch at a Detroit fan.
The referees did not see the incident at the time, which allowed the wide receiver to escape immediate punishment. However, after reviewing the footage later, the NFL decided to suspend Metcalf for two games.
The fan Metcalf punched was identified as Ryan Kennedy. Metcalf claimed the fan made racial and insulting comments about his family. In the video footage, the fan does appear to be taunting Metcalf while leaning down from the stands, though it has not been confirmed what was actually said.
Following the incident, many people sided with Metcalf, criticizing the NFL’s decision and even demanding action against the fan. However, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Lions’ fan code of conduct review found no violation, and the team does not plan to take action against the fan.
“Here is the Lions fan code of conduct. The team found no violation and does not plan to action against the fan, who identified himself to the @freep as Ryan Kennedy. But the NFL is now following up with the team after hearing from DK Metcalf and others in his appeal hearing,” Tom Pelissero wrote on X.

Despite this, many fans and notable figures around the league continue to support Metcalf during the controversy.
Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin Sides With Metcalf
Amid the controversy surrounding his wide receiver, head coach Mike Tomlin publicly showed his support for Metcalf. Speaking with Steelers correspondent Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show, Tomlin shared his stance on the situation.
“He did explain to me why he did what he did. I certainly don’t condone the behavior, but I support DK,” Tomlin said. “I really don’t have a lot to add other than what I just told you.”
Metcalf remains one of the Steelers’ most reliable offensive weapons, recording 59 receptions for 850 yards and six touchdowns this season. He currently ranks No. 18 on PFSN’s Wide Receiver Impact with a score of 82.
