Mr. Irrelevant just got paid. After draft day, it was plausible that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy would never see an NFL start in his career.
Now, he’s been to a Super Bowl and is one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. Talk about an improbable start to an NFL career, and Purdy has to be one of the first names brought up. But even after proving people wrong, Purdy still has his doubters.
Former running back LeSean McCoy thinks Purdy’s contract extension will not be justified and that he will likely never be worth the money he was paid.
LeSean McCoy Shuts Down Brock Purdy, 49ers’ Super Bowl Hopes
McCoy thinks that in order to justify this contract that Purdy must win a Super Bowl. But McCoy thinks this 49ers roster will not be making the Super Bowl anytime soon. McCoy shut down the team’s championship aspirations on the May 19 edition of FS1’s show, “The Facility.”
“If he doesn’t go there and win a championship, this means nothing. Because he’s been to in three years, he’s been to a Super Bowl and two conference games, it will never get better than that. So, I’ll say this to y’all. This contract will not be justifiable because they will not be going back to the Super Bowl, no time soon. And he is not a good enough player to carry a team that’s not that talented,” said McCoy.
Will Brock Purdy will live up to his $253M contract? @CutonDime25 weighs in:

The 49ers went through a roster revamp in the offseason and had to make some sacrifices to give Purdy this extension. They lost Deebo Samuel Sr., Charvarius Ward, Dre Greenlaw, and Talanoa Hufanga. Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey are coming off long injuries. San Francisco will look different this year, and while they aren’t Super Bowl favorites, they still have the talent to make the playoffs.
McCoy knows how hard it is to have a stretch like the 49ers had with two conference championship appearances and a Super Bowl appearance in three years. With the sacrifices the team had to make, the current window is closing, and it may be happening fast.
Winning a championship is the standard for the highest-paid quarterbacks, and Purdy will now be held to that with his new extension. The previous success that Purdy had with the 49ers sets the standard very high for him because of what he has shown. If he hadn’t been as successful in the past, the standard would be lower and move up as he sustains success. Yet, this success is what earned him his massive extension.
The pressure for Purdy to succeed is mounting, and the 49ers will need him to be a pivotal part of any deep run. The Super Bowl is the standard, or the critics will continue to doubt this contract. McCoy doesn’t see a way back for San Francisco, but as Purdy has done his whole career, he will have to prove doubters wrong.
