Shedeur Sanders Enters First Training Camp With Cleveland Browns

After a standout collegiate career split between Jackson State and Colorado, Sanders unexpectedly slid to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Once projected as a potential top-10 pick, Sanders fell to No. 144 overall due to concerns about his on-field performance, his pre-draft interviews, and the influence of his outspoken father, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.

Despite this setback on draft day, Sanders finds himself in a quarterback competition with the Browns, where there is currently no established starter. Deshaun Watson is likely to miss the entire 2025 season, leaving either 40-year-old Joe Flacco or former first-round pick Kenny Pickett as the probable Week 1 starter.

Assuming neither one lights it up, rookies Dillon Gabriel and Sanders will be given every opportunity to earn snaps this season. As he begins his first NFL training camp, Sanders shared a message with his supporters via Instagram.

“You know, it’s no excuses. Putting in the work. Do what I’ve got to do,” Sanders said in a clip that showed him lifting weights and throwing passes while wearing Browns gear.

He acknowledged the difficulties ahead, saying, “‘Bout to be time to be legendary, whenever that time is. You know, mentally, at the very beginning, it’ll be a challenge. But I like the challenge now.”

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski recently praised Sanders’ commitment, stating that the rookie quarterback is “working like crazy.”

“[Sanders] is a great kid, and whether it’s a following that he’s earned, that’s something that he’s done a great job of, of interacting with fans, but he is a great, great kid. … He’s working like crazy, just like all the guys,” Stefanski said during a May 23 interview with ESPN Cleveland.

“My office is downstairs,” he added. “They’ve got to walk by my office as they come in. They come in early, and Shedeur, just like all those guys, he’s in there early. He’s getting his work done. So he’s working really, really hard. I like everything there is about [Sanders].”

At the beginning of his time with the Browns, Sanders attracted attention for several high-profile speeding tickets. He has since distanced himself from the spotlight. He briefly addressed these incidents at teammate David Njoku’s charity softball game, acknowledging his mistakes and emphasizing his focus on personal growth.

With those distractions behind him, Sanders appears committed to the upcoming season. The Browns will open their preseason play on August 8 against the Carolina Panthers, where Sanders is expected to get his first taste of NFL action.
