‘What’s the Downside?’ — NFL Analyst Wonders Why League Isn’t Investigating Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Scandal

PFSN analyst Alex Kennedy suggested that the NFL should investigate the controversial scandal involving Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel.

The scandal involving Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel has opened a can of worms into the ethics of their relationship and possible rule-breaking. An explosive article published by The New York Times on Wednesday documented the timeline of events that led to Russini resigning from her job at The Athletic in April.

Analyst Calls for NFL Investigation Into Dianna Russini Affair

As the Russini-Vrabel scandal has unfolded, details of the former NFL insider’s influence in aiding the New England Patriots’ head coach have emerged, raising questions about possible collusion between the pair.

PFSN analyst Alex Kennedy suggested that the NFL should at least investigate the reported collusion between Russini and Vrabel, if only to quench the prevailing discourse surrounding the scandal.

“The NFL announced that it won’t be investigating Vrabel under the personal conduct policy, which I believe is the right move,” Kennedy said. “However, I do think the NFL should investigate whether there was any collusion between Vrabel and Russini.”

“It would be extremely difficult to prove that they colluded, but I think the league should at least try to look into it and see what they find. What’s the downside?” he added, “Even just from an optics standpoint, it looks better to investigate and find nothing than to sweep it under the rug.”

In 2021, Russini reported that the Atlanta Falcons had been offered a future first-round pick for Julio Jones, which turned out to be false. The Tennessee Titans, who were mentioned as a ‘long shot’ to land the wide receiver, swooped in and acquired Jones and a 2023 sixth-round pick for a 2022 second round pick and a 2023 fourth round pick.

Vrabel was the coach of the Titans when they landed Jones and several analysts have questioned whether Russini played a part in misleading other teams to allow Tennessee to acquire the wide receiver at a discount.

Mike Florio Delivers Verdict on Russini Investigation

During Wednesday’s segment of “Pro Football Talk,” analyst Mike Florio predicted that the internal investigation being carried out by The Athletic into the Russini-Vrabel affair could be dropped on the Fourth of July weekend.

“The ultimate opportunity to dump bad news into a spot where no one is going to notice it: Friday, July 3, at 4:00,” Florio said. “Fourth of July weekend will have already started! They may do it Thursday, July 2, just so it’s not that obvious, and it’s got the same result since a lot of people are going to be off on Friday, the 3rd.”

“But that window, July 2 and July 3, that’s what I’m looking at for The Athletic to announce its final outcome of the Dianna Russini investigation,” he added.

The Athletic revealed that its investigation into Russini does not hinge on her personal conduct, but rather on her journalistic conduct over the years, since she joined the outlet from ESPN in 2023.
