Lance Heard is an offensive tackle from Tennessee who is ranked No. 44 on my NFL Draft Top 100 Big Board. This comprehensive scouting report analyzes Heard’s draft potential, current mock draft trends, and where he ranks among the top prospects.
Lance Heard’s NFL Draft Potential
Lance Heard supersedes most 2026 NFL Draft offensive tackle prospects with his sheer size, and he’s undergoing an ascent eerily similar to that of his predecessor at Tennessee, Darnell Wright. Wright was a middling former five-star recruit before his final season, where he elevated his game and eventually earned a first-round selection by the Chicago Bears. It’s uncertain if Heard will rise quite that high, but Heard has undeniably improved his stock in 2025.
At 6’6″, 330 pounds, with near-34″ arms, Heard is an overwhelming physical specimen. His size translates to elite hand power and play strength, and he relies on both to pummel defenders into submission and end reps early past the contact point. In the running game, Heard can seal off gaps with his suffocating core and raw strength, and he also has the elite linear explosiveness to surge across gaps on down blocks, wall off running lanes, and plow interior linemen off the ball.
Heard is a mauler with range and power in the run game, and his pass protection is just as enticing. While his leveraging and pad level still need work — an expected drawback of towering at 6’6″ — he has good synergetic feel, good patience, and his fast and heavy hands can completely erode rusher composure.
While Tennessee’s offense features more quick concepts that most, Heard has shown nonetheless that he can match rushers, adjust his tempo and footwork based on attack angles, and use his size and length as weapons to smother opponents when they misstep.
Taking it a step further in pass protection, Heard has also shown he can influence rushers with feigned swipes, before violently latching or levying snatch-and-traps to erode extensions and end reps right then and there. Heard’s upside is truly invigorating, but he needs to keep improving his pad level, knee bend, and center of gravity, or stronger NFL defenders will take advantage of his poor leverage play and get him lopsided. There’s still work to do, but Heard has the potential to be a lockdown presence on the blindside.
CFB Week 9 Update
Lance Heard delivered for the Tennessee offense against a Kentucky Wildcats team that didn’t quite want to go away. In the quick game, Heard’s hand power and violence proved stifling against pass-rushers who hopelessly tried to win quick, but he also displayed the foot speed and recalibration quickness to square up and keep leverage and depth.
Meanwhile, on run game reps, Heard’s driving power proved overwhelming more than once against both interior blockers and linebackers crashing down. In a wide-open OT class, Heard’s domineering physical profile is enough to generate interest, and he’s playing at a high level.
