Texas A&M Aggies wide receiver KC Concepcion is already famous ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, but not only for his football acumen. The receiver made headlines at the NFL Combine for courageously giving interviews despite having a speech impediment, and he recently told his full story.
KC Concepcion Recalls Being Bullied for Speech Impediment
Concepcion was born with a speech impediment that he’s had to deal with his entire life. Naturally, social environments presented him with unusual challenges, especially at school. In a phase of life that’s notorious for bullies, Concepcion faced struggles most kids didn’t.
“The other kids at school, they’d notice how I’d get stuck on certain words,” he wrote in The Players’ Tribune. “Or that it would take me a second to respond to the teacher, or to tell them my name. And look — kids are mean sometimes. Simple as that. They’d point at me, or make faces, or raise their eyebrows, and then it’d be like… ‘What’s wrong with you?!??!’ Or ‘Why can’t you talk normal? Are you dumb or something????’ Dead in my face.”
While the NFL has seen players with speech impediments, such as Darren Sproles, Concepcion is quickly becoming the best-known example, especially as he’s trying to inspire others.
“Man… it was tough,” Concepcion added. “But that’s how it went for me as a little kid. Every day. Monday through Friday at school. There were so many afternoons where I’d come home from school just totally beat down. I’d be crying my eyes out to my mom, for real.”
Concepcion’s story is one of grit, internal battles, and persistence that go beyond what fans can see — an American story.
“My mom, she would do her best to comfort me,” he said. “She’d tell me to keep my chin up, and she would always remind me that, no matter what anyone tried to say… there was nothing at all wrong with me. She’d do everything she could to boost my confidence. And tell me that tomorrow was another day.”
Tomorrow was indeed another day, and a young Concepcion tackled it as such. Starting in high school, he channeled his best efforts into becoming a master wide receiver, earning a scholarship at NC State as a four-star recruit.
