For over 16 seasons, Dale Carter served as the public address announcer for the Kansas City Chiefs. Lost in television is the work of public address announcers. They serve as the voice for the crowd and often, the eyes, as many high seats would constitute sitting in the nosebleed section.
PA announcers usually enjoy a long run with a franchise, frequently outlasting general managers, coaches, and players. They become a part of the team’s homefield advantage, a singular voice slicing through the crowd’s roar to provide information.
What Did Former KC Chiefs PA Announcer Dale Carter Say About Leaving Team Before the Home Opener?
Before the Chiefs became a modern dynasty, Carter worked the microphone for every game, announcing every tackle, catch, and penalty at Arrowhead Stadium. Carter took to social media to discuss why he will no longer be the voice.
“Today, I feel like an enormous weight has been lifted from me,” wrote Carter. “I have informed the Kansas City Chiefs that I am resigning, effective immediately, as Stadium PA Voice of the Chiefs. I have had an incredible 16+ year run with 6 AFC Championship games at Arrowhead.

“So, why leave? Over the last few years, the team has changed what I do. Going into the playoffs last year, they asked me to change how I’ve called the games significantly. Going into the season, they wanted a further adjustment that crosses my red line.”
The first sentence suggests that something stressful occurred behind the scenes. Suppose Carter feels relieved to exit; however, an opening statement that reads as nebulous as that one doesn’t eliminate any possibility of interbooth squabbles or job fatigue.
The second paragraph begins to delve into the matter at hand. How did the team force him to alter his style? Was it the inflection of his voice, complaints from opposing teams, or just the team wanting him to embrace their mission fully and conform to rules? What significant changes to his approach did he make?

While apparently ecstatic to walk away, Carter did not bash his team. The entire message does not insult, berate, or demean the franchise. From afar, he will remember and reflect on the good times, not the stress of later seasons.
Later in his explanation, he mentioned spending time with his family and working at a country music station, where he serves as an on-air talent/program director. Additionally, he is running for political office in Jackson County, MO. Subsequently, maybe bringing on a potential new responsibility also became a time issue.
The Chiefs have not named a replacement for Carter to this point. How will they fill the job vacancy? This Sunday, Kansas City welcomes the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles to Arrowhead.
