Justin Jefferson’s locker sits next to J.J. McCarthy’s in the Minnesota Vikings’ facility. Every day, the All-Pro receiver finds another chance to talk football with his young quarterback. It’s not just small talk. Jefferson knows his career depends on McCarthy’s success, and he’s not leaving anything to chance.
How Is Justin Jefferson Helping J.J. McCarthy Build His Confidence?
Jefferson recently spoke with Jason Fitz of Yahoo! Sports, explaining that he wants McCarthy to step up and become more confident as the Vikings’ new starter. The second-year quarterback missed his entire rookie season with a meniscus tear suffered in the preseason opener.
“I think now he’s just becoming more confident, more settled in, I would like to say, as his teammate and, just as a captain of the team, make him dial in every chance that I can,” said Jefferson.
Jefferson explained how he’s going the extra mile to build that relationship. The proximity of their lockers gives him daily opportunities to connect with McCarthy on multiple levels.
“Our lockers are right next to each other,” Jefferson continued. “Every chance that I get, I talk to him about football, about anything that goes on outside of football. I just try to get to know him as much as I can. When the season comes and whenever we’re locked in, I want him to be just as confident as I am of him to make the plays out there.”
The injury setback that sidelined McCarthy during his rookie year frustrated Jefferson’s plans to develop their connection. He acknowledged how that lost time affected their ability to build chemistry.
“Last year he got hurt and wasn’t able to really be hands-on, being locked in, connecting with the receivers and everything else that goes on with being a quarterback,” explained Jefferson.
These comments reinforced his statements earlier this week, stating that he expects McCarthy to do big things in the upcoming season.
“I’m excited for J.J. [McCarthy]. I’m excited to see what he’s going to do for our team. I’m definitely expecting a lot from him,” Jefferson said in a promotional video for IMG Academy.
Why Does Jefferson Need McCarthy to Succeed?
Jefferson’s investment in McCarthy’s development stems from a harsh reality: quarterback instability has defined his NFL career. Since Minnesota drafted him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Jefferson has put up incredible numbers while playing with five different starting quarterbacks.
The 2023 season perfectly shows how quarterback chaos affects elite receivers. Jefferson endured his worst statistical season that year, with four players starting at quarterback. Kirk Cousins ruptured his Achilles tendon that season, leaving Joshua Dobbs, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall to handle starting duties in an ultimately futile season.
McCarthy represents Jefferson’s sixth different starting quarterback in Minnesota. The receiver hopes this one finally provides the long-term stability the Vikings have been searching for at the position.
