What Does This Honor Mean to Julian Edelman?
For Julian Edelman, the occasion feels deeply personal. The wide receiver, who spent his entire 12-year career with New England, admitted he never imagined such recognition when his journey began.
“This is an unbelievable, surreal moment for me, just thinking about where I came from, my story,” Edelman said. He added that if someone had asked him on his first day whether this day would arrive, “I don’t think I would have said yeah.”
Edelman’s story has long resonated with fans for its underdog roots. Drafted in the seventh round in 2009 out of Kent State, he grew into one of the franchise’s most reliable slot receivers. Over 12 seasons, he recorded 620 receptions for 6,822 yards and 36 touchdowns. His performance was instrumental in three Super Bowl victories, including earning Super Bowl LIII MVP honors.
This week’s reflection also touched on the unique environment that helped shape his career. “Being drafted here and playing my whole career here, being surrounded by the people… the Tom Bradys, the Kevin Faulks early, the Tedy Bruschis early, the Matthew Slaters, the Devin McCourtys, those guys challenged me in ways and made me put myself in a mindset to be the guy not to want to disappoint anyone, that I think it was a blessing for me to come here,” Edelman said. That culture, he noted, pushed him beyond his limits and allowed him to carve out a role on one of football’s most successful teams.
However, the weekend’s festivities are not only about Edelman. Bill Parcells, the coach who led New England from 1993 to 1996, is also being inducted. Parcells turned around a struggling franchise in the 1990s, guiding the team to playoff appearances in 1994 and 1996.

His departure to the rival New York Jets in 1997 remains a point of contention among fans, yet his influence is undeniable. Parcells had been a finalist for the Patriots Hall of Fame multiple times before his selection this year.
The induction ceremony, presented by RTX, begins at 4 p.m. ET on the Patriot Place Plaza outside the Patriots Hall of Fame. Edelman was officially selected by fan vote on May 5 as the 37th inductee into the Hall. From a late-round draft pick to a Patriots icon, his candid reflections underscore what the day means not just for him, but for all who witnessed his improbable rise.
