The New England Patriots will hope they won’t have to call on their backup quarterback, Joshua Dobbs, in the Super Bowl unless the game is out of hand in their favor. In that case, they wouldn’t care at all. But Dobbs will have to be ready in case they need him, and he’s got quite the resume to his name, stretching beyond football as well.
Joshua Dobbs’ Life Away From Football
Dobbs has a unique resume for NFL players. He attended the University of Tennessee and graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering. This degree requires rigorous study, and earning it as an athlete is quite an incredible feat. Dobbs is an official aerospace engineer because of his degree.
His experience as an aerospace engineer didn’t stop after graduation, though. He worked at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Dobbs worked as an extern while being a part of the famous SpaceX launch to the International Space Station.
His double life has earned him an interesting nickname, “The Passtronaut”. As a member of the 49ers, he took a trip away from the team to head to the Midwest to observe the rare solar eclipse from one of NASA’s centers in Cleveland, Ohio.
Being an NFL quarterback is pretty cool, but being an aerospace engineer on top of playing in the NFL might be even cooler. He grew up with an interest in space and pursued his dream of becoming an engineer. Now, he gets to combine all of his dreams as he plays in a Super Bowl and works with NASA.
Dobbs has a crazy life off the field, balancing his obligations, but it’s safe to say worrying about space is not on his mind right now. He’s got to focus on planning for the Super Bowl in the event he’s called upon. Dobbs could be walking out of Levi’s Stadium with some new hardware.
He’s made a career as a backup who can step up and be a serviceable NFL quarterback. His biggest opportunity came in 2023, when he started in 12 games, eight for the Arizona Cardinals and four for the Minnesota Vikings.

It’s been a long time coming for Dobbs to end up on a contender, and the Patriots came calling for him this offseason after having experience playing under head coach Mike Vrabel with the Titans.
We’ll see if Dobbs will have an aerospace degree and a Lombardi trophy by the end of the night, and he’ll likely be the only person in the world who can claim that title.
