Coming off the best season of his career, Josh Allen can only hope to improve on his performance. Capturing the first MVP of his career, he put together a remarkable performance to drag the Buffalo Bills, in a reset year no less, to the playoffs. However, his season came to an end, as it often has, in a heartbreaking postseason defeat to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
But for a team with a below-average defense throughout the year, their year was already a success by reaching the AFC Championship Game. This season, they’re coming in with a much-improved roster, particularly on the defensive end. However, the engine of the entire operation is still their superstar quarterback. But will Bills Mafia see a change of pace this year with Allen suiting up in their preseason opener against the New York Giants?
Will Josh Allen Suit Up Against the New York Giants?
By the numbers, the 2024 season was among the worst of Allen’s young career. He had the fewest passing yards and touchdowns of his career since 2020. However, where he excelled was in taking care of the football (career-low six interceptions).
As a result, he empowered the Bills to a top-five offense in the league, per PFSN’s Offense+ metric. However, it became clear that the unit needed some more versatility with the way their season ended.
With more than three minutes left in the game and the ball in his hands, Allen could only muster 17 total yards of offense, thanks to the predictability of Buffalo’s system. As a result, the gameplan has seen some tweaks this year to improve theiir chances in the playoffs.
However, the team will work on those tweaks directly during practice and in the regular season games. Like years past, head coach Sean McDermott is sticking to his guns and resting his starters for preseason.
Josh Allen will not play Saturday in Preseason Week 1 vs the Giants.

As a result, Bills Mafia will not see their MVP in action against New York. For a player of his caliber, the decision is a smart one from the organization. At the end of the day, the only two things left for Allen to prove are beating Mahomes in the playoffs and winning a Super Bowl.
Some extra rest and the chance to avoid potential injuries in preseason might be the safer choice for the Bills to make with their physically bruising quarterback.
