Until Aaron Rodgers either signs with a team or retires, his name will continue to generate media interest. The veteran free agent has kept the NFL world guessing as to his next move, with the Pittsburgh Steelers openly admitting their interest.
In a recent interview, Rodgers’ former long-term teammate Jordy Nelson discussed the quarterback’s situation.
Jordy Nelson Speaks on Aaron Rodgers’ Free Agency Situation
Rodgers is a man in demand, specifically in Pittsburgh, where Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has made no attempt to hide the team’s interest. The Steelers are without an obvious starting quarterback for the 2025 season and have seen their options narrow throughout the offseason.
Pittsburgh could go into the season with what they have, with Mason Rudolph the most likely to lead the team after returning from a year with the Tennessee Titans. The Steelers also added further depth by drafting former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round of the recent 2025 draft. Howard is more likely to sit and learn in his first years in the league, but he’s a proven winner, having led Ohio State to a national title last season.
Rodgers is the team’s clear preference, though, and Nelson explained that the four-time NFL MVP would take his time with such a big decision.
“I have no idea what he’s going to do,” he said. “The one thing I know is he’s going to take his time, he’s going to think through it. He’s going to make the best decision for himself.”
Nelson Warns Rodgers About Retirement
Retirement remains an option for the Green Bay Packers legend, something he touched on during an interview with Pat McAfee, in which he cleared the air on his situation. But according to Nelson, that’s not a decision to be made lightly. During his interview with RG, Nelson stated that his former teammate would know when the time was right.
“Once it’s done, it’s done. You’re not going to be able to come back and do it. You’ll know when it’s time to be done. You’ll know, at least I did.”
Nelson’s own retirement came in 2019, following his lone season away from Green Bay. He was drafted by the Packers in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft and spent 10 years with the team, winning the Super Bowl at the end of the 2010 season.
After spending 2018 with the then-Oakland Raiders, Nelson signed a one-day contract with Green Bay to retire as a Packer. He was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 2023, where Rodgers will undoubtedly join him in the future.
