Jordan Poyer remains in free agency, waiting on a team to play for in the 2025 season. At 34, the veteran who previously spent seven seasons with the Buffalo Bills, played for the Miami Dolphins in 2024, appearing in 16 regular-season games.
He mentioned on “Good Morning Football” that he would love to return to Buffalo if given the opportunity, while adding that he enjoys his time away from football.
Will Jordan Poyer Return to the Bills After Just One Year in Miami?
Poyer’s NFL career didn’t begin with the success he eventually found in Buffalo. Selected in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, he made the team’s roster to start the season but was cut after Week 6 and claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns.
Although he didn’t get many starting opportunities in Cleveland and was mainly part of the rotation, he remained with the team from midway through the 2013 season until 2016. That’s when he signed with the Bills, and his career turned around.
In Buffalo, Poyer became a full-time starter at free safety and established himself as one of the most reliable safeties in the NFL. He peaked in 2021, when he was named First-Team All-Pro after recording five interceptions, three sacks, and 93 total tackles.
In an interview, the player spoke about the 2024 season in Miami and how his performance didn’t meet expectations due to a combination of factors that ultimately led to the team missing the postseason.
“I love the game, you know? I’m in a place right now where I played 12 years, extremely thankful and blessed to have played the game for such a long time,” Poyer said. “Last year was an extremely tough year on so many levels. Our team wasn’t very good. I didn’t play as well as I wanted to play. It was just a really tough year.”
Then, Poyer spoke about his love for Buffalo and how, now at 34 and in free agency, he would like to return to the franchise, saying it would be a dream come true to retire there.
“Would I like to play again? Absolutely. Whatever that looks like… It’d be dope, it’d be ideal to have a fantasy ending and be able to retire a Bill, but who knows? I’m just being an open book right now, really enjoying life for what it is.”
Currently, Buffalo has Damar Hamlin as the starting free safety, another player deeply connected to the franchise for his remarkable comeback story after one of the most devastating on-field incidents in NFL history. Even so, the veteran could still contribute in a rotational role, or even reclaim a starting spot if given the opportunity.
“Extremely thankful for the Bills organization, Philadelphia organization, Cleveland, Miami, but in particular, Buffalo. That’s my home. My heart is always going to be there. I’m always thankful for all the moments that I had there, all the teammates, all the cool people, like Mitch (Morse), that I met out there. I’m just playing it by ear right now, but would I love to play? Absolutely,” he added.
It’s unclear whether the Bills have any interest in bringing the veteran back to the franchise, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the season begins with Poyer still in free agency, only signing with a team after another player goes down with an injury. However, if the return does happen, Poyer would have the chance to fulfill his dream of retiring in Bills colors.
