There’s nothing more concerning for an NFL fan base than seeing their starting quarterback get hurt in a preseason game. Unfortunately, that happened to the Green Bay Packers when Jordan Love, entering his sixth season with the team, injured his thumb during their preseason opener against the Jets.

An NFL insider has now provided an update on Love’s injury and the length of time he is expected to be sidelined after undergoing surgery on his thumb.

Jordan Love Injury Update: Recovery Timeline and Week 1 Availability

On what was supposed to be the final play of Jordan Love’s preseason snaps against the Jets, the Packers quarterback injured his left thumb. He tried to practice through the injury on Monday but ultimately decided to have surgery on Tuesday.

The injury reportedly involves a ligament in his thumb, which is why surgery was necessary. The good news is it’s on his left hand, his non-throwing hand.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Packers expect him to be ready for the season opener.

“The team is hoping Love can return to practice next week, and the Packers expect him to be ready for the regular-season opener,” Schefter posted to X.

While any injury to a team’s starting quarterback is concerning, this is overall positive news for Green Bay. The Packers will need Love to be fully healthy if they want a successful season.

Love is entering his sixth NFL season in 2025 and his third as the Packers’ starting quarterback. So far, he has thrown for 8,154 yards, 60 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions in 33 starts. He has been a key part of the Packers’ offensive success. If they want that to continue, his health has to be the top priority.

While Schefter says the team hopes Love will return to practice next week, it wouldn’t be surprising if they hold him out a bit longer to be safe. During Love’s absence over the next week or so, backups Malik Willis and Sean Clifford will get reps with Green Bay’s first-team offense. When Love returns to practice, it would be surprising if he plays in any more preseason games.

Despite the surgery on his thumb, it looks like the Packers have avoided disaster and their QB1 will be ready for Week 1. Green Bay opens the season against its NFC North rival, the Detroit Lions, on Sunday, September 7. That game will truly test how ready Love and the Packers are as they chase a division title and a Super Bowl trophy in 2025.
