After being heralded as one of the best new voices in broadcasting when he kicked off his career in the booth with CBS in 2017, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has become one of the most criticized commentators over the past few seasons, as his worthwhile commentary waned into gimmicks and below-average analysis.
While the broadcast booths have seen some shuffling over the past couple of seasons, former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady entered FOX’s top team as a color commentator with Kevin Burkhardt in 2024. While there were some growing pains, there was considerable improvement in 2025, so much so that 2026 NFL Honors host Jon Hamm shouted him out while taking a shot at Romo in the process.

After dominating the NFL, winning seven Super Bowls, and rewriting the NFL record books, Brady finally retired in 2023 at the age of 45. While he took the 2023 season off, it wouldn’t be long before he was back in the NFL world, but this time as a color commentator for FOX for the 2024 NFL season.
As a member of their No. 1 team, Brady teamed with Burkhardt to headline FOX’s broadcast team. He would also call Super Bowl 59 in his first year of broadcasting. While it took some time for him to get used to life behind the microphone after years under center, he took a noticeable jump in quality from the 2024 to the 2025 season.
While fans were quick to notice over the course of this season, Hamm, the 2026 NFL Honors host, also pointed out the improvement while taking a shot at Romo in the process, and fans couldn’t help but react with this fan pointing out the obvious as Hamm poked fun at the former Cowboys quarterback, posting, “Tony Romo catching strays. 😂😂😂”

Fans weren’t the only ones caught off guard by the shot at Romo; BetMGM posted a viral gif of 50 Cent showing a surprised reaction, captioned “Tony Romo watching the NFL Honors.”

However, while some were caught off guard, others couldn’t help but be amused as their season-long critiques were finally turned into a joke. PFSN’s deputy editor Alex Kennedy was amused by the shot, posting, “Jon Hamm bashing Tony Romo during NFL Honors. 🤣”
No matter what your opinions of the 2025 commentators were, it was rather amusing to see Hamm get a shot off at not just the players and coaches, but also the commentators.
