The John Harbaugh effect is already rippling through the New York Giants, and it is anything but subtle. One reporter commented on the culture and positivity throughout the building on Day 1 of offseason workouts, something that hadn’t been seen “for years.”
But this goes beyond structure or discipline. Harbaugh is pushing a mindset that players are still trying to grasp, one he describes in a way that has caught the league’s attention. What exactly did he say to define it?
John Harbaugh’s Bold Vision Signals Cultural Shift in New York Giants
During the press conference, Harbaugh was asked about trying to change the culture in the organization.
“I hear your building already has a positive vibe that has not permeated there for years,” the reporter noted. “‘Culture’ is a hard word to define. How do you change what has been a losing culture? What does that word mean to you?” Harbaugh’s reply was a roadmap for the Giants in the 2026 NFL season.
“Someday I’m going to do a book, Gary Myers will probably want to write it,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll talk about all those things you just asked. That’s some really deep stuff. That definitely is at the heart of what we’re going to try to do, try to be excited about every single day, try to approach the day, as my dad would say, with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.
“We talked to the guys about that today. We had a good time. We had fun. We had great meetings. It was just a joy to be around the guys. We had all but three guys here. It was just amazing. That’s what it is. It’s just a bunch of people coming together to build a team that plays like a team and plays better than any other team. If you do that, then you have a chance to be the best team because the best team is the team that plays the best.”
Harbaugh said he mentioned his “enthusiasm unknown to mankind” approach during the team meeting earlier in the day, adding that being around the players brought a genuine sense of energy.
“It was fun to be around the guys. It was fun to stand in front of the New York Giants today. It was an honor,” he added. “I told them that. It was an honor to stand before the New York Giants, have them communicate back. We had a fun time. We had a great meeting.”
Dexter Lawrence, Paulson Adebo, and Sam Roberts were the three players absent, with Roberts currently away from the team as he continues to recover from surgery.
It’s worth noting that both Harbaugh brothers, John and Jim, have talked about attacking each day with “enthusiasm unknown to mankind” for many years. Jim has said it during Los Angeles Chargers press conferences, and there’s a video of the two brothers discussing this approach a decade ago while addressing the Baltimore Ravens.
If the Giants are serious about changing the team’s direction, then a Harbaugh-driven culture is exactly what they need in 2026. This starts with daily intensity that shows up in practice and preparation, where every rep has purpose and low effort is not tolerated.
Accountability becomes non-negotiable. Players are expected to own mistakes immediately, whether it is a missed assignment or a lack of focus. That standard is a big reason why teams like the Ravens remained consistently competitive under Harbaugh.
Alongside that, the Giants must embrace a physical identity built in the trenches, becoming tougher and more disciplined on both sides of the ball. Leadership also shifts inside the locker room. Veterans need to set the tone and enforce standards.
Ultimately, Harbaugh’s culture is about consistency over flash, building a team that executes the basics right every single time.
