After the Baltimore Ravens fired John Harbaugh, the 63-year-old coach received offers from seven NFL teams to become a head coach. Though he has scheduled many interviews, Harbough stumbled at the New York Giants for a good reason.
And after so much chaos over contract deals and strong demands, the New York Giants and Harbaugh announced major news for the NFL, especially in New York City.
Giants and John Harbaugh Agreed for Five-Year, $100 Million Deal
On Jan. 17, Harbaugh said he agreed to his new five-year deal. “This is the New York Giants,” Harbaugh told ESPN. “I’m proud and honored to be the head coach of this historic franchise, and especially excited to work with the Mara and Tisch families. But most of all, I can’t wait to get started with the great players on this football team to see what we can accomplish together.” It was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Albert Breer also reported on X, “As part of the five-year deal, new Giants coach John Harbaugh will be reporting directly to ownership, I’m told. That’s a departure from the norm for New York, and a concession made to the new man in charge.”
Initially, when Harbaugh’s name was circulating for the Giants HC job, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Jeremy Fowler reported that the New York team and Harbaugh were finalizing a deal and were close to it. But now, it is official. Harbaugh has put pen to paper to sign a $100 million, five-year deal with them.
With this quite a massive contract in the context of NFL coaches, Harbaugh will tie a $100 million contract to the Kansas City Chiefs’ Andy Reid. He will receive an annual salary of $20 million.
This amount will add a bag to his net worth. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Harbaugh’s net worth was $40 million before signing this contract with the Giants. He was ranked third among the highest-paid NFL coaches, behind only Reid and the Denver Broncos’ Sean Payton. But with the new deal, he will eclipse Payton and Reid.
What were Harbaugh’s Demands Before Signing $100 Million Contract with the Giants?
ESPN Giants reporter Jordan Raanan reported on Jan. 16 that the delay in finalizing Harbaugh’s contract is not about money but about how the organization operates.
Raanan explained that after speaking with former players and coaches who have experience with both the Baltimore Ravens and the Giants, a clear contrast emerged between the two franchises.
“First off, John Harbaugh’s deal will get finalized soon,” Raanan wrote. “But as they sort through organizational and operational issues, something to keep in mind. Change is difficult, but I spoke with former players and coaches who were with the Ravens and Giants. To a man, they suggested the Ravens operation was running at a different level.”
That difference extends across multiple departments. “Everything from analytics, training, video, medical, personnel,” Raanan added. “Baltimore is known to spare no expense. Huge staff, top-notch facilities. One of the best-run organizations top to bottom in the NFL.”
According to sources familiar with Harbaugh’s mindset, that standard now shapes his expectations in New York. Several people told Raanan that Harbaugh is pushing for major changes in how the Giants run their football operations, with those discussions already underway as contract talks continue.
But it seems to be resolved as the deal is now made. The Giants have received big news. The expectations from Harbaugh are high as the New York team hasn’t won a Super Bowl in the past 14 years.
