The Buffalo Bills’ offseason took an early hit as newly acquired edge rusher Joey Bosa is expected to miss all of the team’s spring practices due to a calf injury, head coach Sean McDermott announced Tuesday.
The five-time Pro Bowler signed a one-year, $12.6 million deal with Buffalo in March. He suffered the injury during a team workout late last week.
Sean McDermott Reveals Joey Bosa’s Estimated Return Date
“Joey Bosa will not participate today,” McDermott said. “He pulled a calf, I believe it was late last week. Thursday, I believe. So he’ll be out for, more than likely, the foreseeable springtime at least, and then should be good to go by training camp.”
McDermott says Joey Bosa most likely will not be back until training camp.

Bosa, 29, joined the Bills after nine seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. He has earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers, but has also struggled with durability.
Bosa has not played a full season since 2019, missing 23 games over the past three years due to various injuries. Last season, the five-time Pro Bowler played in 14 games, registering five sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and two forced fumbles.
The Bills brought in Bosa to help fill the void left by the release of veteran Von Miller, but his latest setback has raised concerns about his ability to stay on the field. McDermott acknowledged Bosa’s injury history, calling durability and availability “key ties” to the team’s roster decisions.
“It is concerning,” McDermott said. “Durability, availability are key ties to our roster, and so we basically look ahead in terms of what he’s doing now, which is getting himself the treatment he needs, and he’s working hard at it. We get him back when we get him back, probably at this point training camp.”
Bosa’s absence during organized team activities and minicamps will allow other players on the Bills’ defensive front to step up. Despite the setback, the team remains optimistic that the veteran will be ready for the start of training camp, where he is expected to play a significant role in Buffalo’s pass rush rotation.
Across nine seasons with the Chargers, Bosa registered 72 sacks in 107 appearances for the team. His total of 72 sacks is the second-most all-time by a Charger, fewer than only Leslie O’Neal’s 105.5. The Bills begin training camp in late July, with Bosa’s health status likely to remain a focal point as the team prepares for the 2025 season.
