Jets Predicted To Draft North Dakota State QB Cole Payton After Trading for Geno Smith

The New York Jets are predicted to draft North Dakota State quarterback Cole Payton as a developmental project behind Geno Smith.

The New York Jets made a decisive move to stabilize their quarterback room. By acquiring Geno Smith, the franchise added a proven veteran with experience, efficiency, and leadership.

But the move may not close the door on adding a young quarterback. Instead, it could signal the beginning of a layered plan for the future.

Cole Payton Emerges as an Intriguing Developmental Option for the Jets

With Smith now in place, the Jets appear positioned to explore a long-term project behind him. One name gaining traction is North Dakota State quarterback Cole Payton. Veteran draft analyst Todd McShay recently highlighted Payton as a major sleeper in the class.

“This is the guy I’ve been dying to talk about… the most underrated quarterback in this class,” McShay said. “In conversations with NFL GMs, this is kind of the guy… drilling spots left and right. In the pocket, on time.”

That endorsement carries weight, especially for a prospect projected as a Day 3 selection.

Payton’s 2025 season showcased why evaluators are intrigued. In his lone year as a full-time starter, he threw for 2,719 yards and 16 touchdowns, and he completed over 70% of his passes. He added another 777 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground, highlighting dual-threat ability.

His athletic profile also turned heads at the NFL Combine. A 40-inch vertical and 10-foot-10 broad jump ranked among the best for quarterbacks, reinforcing his high-end physical traits.

His arm strength allows him to attack multiple angles, and his mobility helps extend plays under pressure.

Still, there are developmental concerns. Payton has just one full season as a starter. His processing speed and in-game experience remain areas that could need refinement.

That’s where the Jets’ situation becomes relevant.

Smith, now 35, brings stability and production. Last season, he completed 67.4% of his passes for 3,025 yards and 19 touchdowns. In 2024, he posted a 70.4% completion rate with 4,320 yards, showing he can still operate at a high level.

For New York, that could create an ideal environment. Payton would not be forced into early action. Instead, he could develop behind a veteran who has navigated both struggles and success across a 12-year career.

There is also precedent. North Dakota State has produced quarterbacks like Carson Wentz and Trey Lance. McShay even suggested Payton might be the most complete prospect to come from the program.

Payton carries a 75.14 PFSN grade in Scouting Report and ranks No. 178 overall, while sitting as the No. 7 quarterback in the class. His elite 9.97 RAS score highlights his rare athletic traits, which align with his combine performance.

Looking ahead, the Jets’ approach could balance present competitiveness with future planning. If Payton is available, he might not just be a depth addition. He could be a long-term investment in a position the franchise has been trying to stabilize for years.
