‘One of the Worst Owners’ — Cowboys Fans Rip Jerry Jones Over Controversial ‘Soap Opera’ Admission

NFL fans were not pleased when hearing Dallas Cowboys owner-general manager Jerry Jones talk about keeping his team in the headlines.

Jerry Jones never ducks controversy, and this week was no different. The Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager stepped into another self-made storm on Tuesday, August 12, when a few comments lit up social media and reminded everyone how much he enjoys keeping his team front and center.

How Did NFL Fans Respond to Jerry Jones’ Words?

Jones spoke at a Netflix-sponsored event for a new special, “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys,” which focuses on his rise to power after buying the Cowboys from H.R. “Bum” Bright for $140 million in February 1989. He framed attention as part of the business, and he made it clear he is willing to spark it when necessary.

Jones said, “I do believe if we’re not being looked at, then I’ll do my part to get us looked at. The beautiful thing for networks, or if you will streaming companies, is that the NFL is a 365-day interest factor.

“A lot of programming, you have to spend as much to make it, to promote it as you make it,” Jones, who recently got castigated by ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith, said. “The Cowboys are a soap opera 365 days a year. When it gets slow, I stir it up.”

Fans jumped on those words right away, and reactions got loud fast. This fan definitely was not pleased with Jones’ words and posted on X, “Easily one of the worst owners in sports”.

Another fan went straight for the punch line, referencing Jones’ appearance while sharing frustration. The person wrote on X, “old skeleton is ruining everything”. Well, some tried to spin humor out of it, leaning into the show angle, and shared those thoughts on X as well.

Plenty of fans wondered why Jones keeps getting so much mic time. “why do they keep putting a mic in front of Jerry man?” the person wrote on X, adding a couple of laughing emojis along the way.

Some fans tied the comments to on-field results. This fan pointed out that the Cowboys, who will play their second NFL preseason game on Saturday, August 16, against the Baltimore Ravens, have not been too successful under Jones’ leadership. This person flatly wrote, “Cowboys will never be successful as long as this dudes involved.”

Will Jones Learn to Focus on Building A Winner?

Money talk came next, with another fan connecting drama to dollars and the value of the franchise. The person wrote on X, “We know. This is how he turned 140 million into 12.4 billion.”

Attention was the theme, and not everyone saw that as a problem. One wise-cracking fan wrote, “Bro really just said any publicity is good publicity” with a laughing emoji at the end, too.

Then came the bottom line from another corner of X. The person points out, from their perspective, that Jones spends too much time on things like “drama” instead of building a winner. The fan wrote, “Bro doing everything but making a championship roster”.

The Cowboys have won three Super Bowls under Jones’ ownership, but the last one was in 1996. Since then, the team has gone through ups and downs in wins and losses. Jones has spent millions on players, but is stuck in a contract dispute with defensive end Micah Parsons.

For Jones, this may be another round of attention for the brand. Some fans want a sharper focus on building a championship roster, while others simply expect the noise to keep coming either way.
