Jerry Jones Changes Stance on Cowboys’ Trade Announcement After Embarrassing Loss to Cardinals

Things only seem to be getting worse for the Dallas Cowboys as the season wears on. After a highly competitive showing against the Philadelphia Eagles to open the season, they came out with a draw against the Green Bay Packers in the Micah Parsons revenge game. However, since then, they’ve fallen to 3-5-1, with a defense that offers no resistance.

Their playoff hopes are dwindling, but for owner and general manager Jerry Jones, there is still hope for improvement at the trade deadline. Unfortunately, after claiming that moves had already been made, it seems his convictions have softened following a Monday Night Football loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Jerry Jones Shies From Cowboys Trade Announcement

Leading up to their Week 9 game at home, Jones had been telling anyone who would listen that a trade had already been made, but he wasn’t willing to share the name yet. But he promised that the newest addition would immediately help the team’s shortcomings.

Naturally, fans began to speculate, with names ranging from Trey Hendrickson to Bradley Chubb, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and even Maxx Crosby making the rounds. So far, though, no news has come to pass.

Instead, after a 27-17 loss to the Cardinals, it seems like Jones isn’t so sure of a move anymore. As Jon Machota of The Athletic revealed, “Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is walking back a bit on the trade talk he was discussing earlier in the day. It’s still possible, but he doesn’t sound as convicted about it.”

The primary source for the hesitation, according to Machota, was that “he has no interest in trading away any of their current players.” As Jones put it, “I like our nuts and bolts a lot.”

On the other hand, he also made sure to point out that a deal could be made today, rather than waiting until the actual deadline. Moreover, he even dropped another teaser for the Cowboys faithful.

“There is one trade I can do. And I am leaning towards doing it,” reported Clayton Holloway of the NFL Network, as the exact words the long-standing owner of the franchise said to reporters. However, he continued to insist on not naming any names.

Instead, he promised, or threatened, depending on your temperature, “You should see what we do tomorrow.” As things currently stand, the Cowboys’ room for flexibility isn’t very high.

Between the highest-paid player in NFL history, their quarterback, Dak Prescott, and a blockbuster contract for CeeDee Lamb, there is very little wiggle room for Jones. Instead, any potential move would likely involve using draft capital.

With a potential war chest at their disposal, including the pieces acquired from the Parsons trade, the resources are at Jones’ disposal to make a move. But overpaying for an aging veteran might not be the answer for a team with the pieces to build a sustainable contender in the long run.
