JC Tretter walked away from the NFLPA, and nobody saw this coming. Fresh off the chaos of Lloyd Howell’s messy exit as Executive Director, the last thing anyone expected was another bombshell. Now, with back-to-back resignations at the top, the NFL’s union has everyone wondering: What does this mean for players and the game?
Why Did JC Tretter Step Down From the NFLPA?
In the days after Howell resigned amid scandal, Tretter announced he was leaving his post as the NFLPA’s Chief Strategy Officer and completely ruled himself out for the union’s top job. The news hit fast, with Tretter admitting the strain of the role and the publicity storm that came with it were just too much for him and his family.
Instead of stepping into the leadership void, Tretter walked away. He explained his decision publicly on “The Dan Patrick Show,” saying the pressure and hostility overtook any positives.
“I feel like I had nothing left to give the organization,” Tretter said. “In the last five weeks, I feel like I’ve had to sacrifice my public reputation.”

Tretter described being asked to keep quiet about rumors and false stories, not to help the players, but to protect the organization.
“Once this job wasn’t fun anymore or hurt my family I was out,” said Tretter.
Speaking with CBS Sports, Tretter described the last stretch as tough. He said his ability to handle criticism helped in tough negotiations and internal battles, but when things got personal, that was the last straw.
“Over the last couple days, it has gotten very, very hard for my family. And that’s something I can’t deal with,” continued Tretter.
Additionally, Tretter shut down any talk that he might angle for Howell’s former job.
“All I want to do is tell my story and then go be with my family.” Looking back at his time with the union, Tretter admitted, “I fell in love with the idea of what this place could be. And over the last six weeks, I’ve realized what this place is.”
How Did Lloyd Howell’s Scandals Shape Tretter’s Exit?
Tretter’s resignation followed a wave of controversy surrounding Howell. PFSN’s Sean Neumann described how ESPN obtained documents alleging Howell used union money for strip club trips and hid damaging information about NFL owners potentially working together behind closed doors.
Arbitrator Christopher Droner reportedly found that the NFL management council, with the commissioner on board, pushed every team to trim guaranteed money from veteran player contracts. The NFLPA, facing serious questions, chose not to reveal those findings to its members.
Adding to this mess, ESPN uncovered Howell’s consulting gig with the Carlyle Group, which was trying to buy into NFL franchises. This consulting role created a direct conflict of interest, all while Howell’s yearly pay of several million dollars spotlighted the transparency issues plaguing the organization.
With the NFLPA heading into another leadership transition, Tretter’s decision shows how tense things have gotten inside the organization. His exit leaves big questions about the culture within the NFLPA, how transparent its leaders really are, and whether the union can get back to putting players first.
