With the 2025-26 regular season on the horizon and fantasy drafts underway, getting clarity on players’ health is important, and Miami Dolphins running back Jaylen Wright is no exception.
That said, we do have some insight into when the former Tennessee Volunteer will return to action.
Dolphins RB Jaylen Wright Had Surgery
Earlier this month, Wright suffered a leg injury during joint practices with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Mike McDaniel initially stated he was “week-to-week,” but it was later understood that this would impact the start of the season.
Now, though, we have an answer. According to ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques, Wright underwent a “small procedure.”
“Dolphins RB Jaylen Wright had a “small procedure” done that isn’t season-ending but will take some time to recover from, per McDaniel.

“Miami has signed RBs Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty in response,” Louis-Jacques reported.
Additionally, Underdog NFL, the dedicated NFL news account for Underdog Fantasy, added context that Wright “could return at some point in September.”
As Louis-Jacques mentioned, the Dolphins now have Wilson and Hasty on the depth chart behind starter De’Von Achane and another backup, rookie Ollie Gordon II.

Of course, this news regarding Wright comes at a time when Achane will be on the field Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts, per general manager Chris Grier. However, there’s still some trepidation considering he suffered a calf injury in the first preseason game.
Now, with Achane ready to go but possibly dealing with a nagging injury and Wright down for the start of the season, the Dolphins will have to rely on Gordon II a bit more. He’s looked great throughout the preseason, rushing 26 times for 126 yards and a touchdown.

Last season, Wright had 68 carries for 249 yards and no touchdowns. He also caught three passes on six targets for eight yards. The injury is concerning, but his play on the field last year and during the preseason has left some question marks.
In two preseason games this year, he’s had 13 carries for 19 yards. He had a touchdown, but also fumbled, too.
Will Wright come back and instantly step back into that RB2 role, or will Gordon II supplant him as PFSN’s Frank Ammirante believes is a possibility [h/t PFSN’s Jason Katz].
Time will tell.
