Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Jaydon Blue suffered a right ankle injury in the second half of the Cowboys’ final NFL preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Blue, who played his college ball at the University of Texas, was selected by the Cowboys in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
What Happened to Jaydon Blue?
Blue took a handoff and was moving through the Falcons’ defense when an Atlanta player tackled him low.
His right ankle was twisted in the aftermath. Cowboys reporter Jon Machota of The Athletic shared a video clip of the tackle on X.

Dallas medical personnel came out to check on Blue. After the tackle, Blue was shown raising his arms in the air and didn’t seem too shaken up. But he headed to the Dallas sidelines and went into the blue tent to get checked out.
After he came out, word was sent out from the Cowboys that he had twisted his right ankle. Jesse Morse M.D., a Sports Medicine Physician, added some medical context around what Blue might be facing in the next day or two.
“Jaydon Blue, Right ankle injury,” Morse wrote. “This is either a medial ankle sprain or a high-ankle sprain. Unclear on severity. Likely an MRI in the morning. There’s a chance this could potentially impact the early part of his season.”

Fantasy football players are going to be interested in how this might affect building their teams. PFSN’s Jason Katz offers some perspective as Blue currently sits third in the running back hierarchy behind Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders.
What Will Fantasy Players Look at Regarding Blue?
“I am bullish on Blue emerging because I do not believe in the talent of Williams and Sanders,” Katz wrote. “At the same time, the history of Day 3 rookie running backs making strong impacts in fantasy is not great.
“Simply put, we know what Williams and Sanders are,” Katz wrote. “We do not know what Blue is. Therefore, he’s the one I want to take shots on the most.”
Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer provided an update on the rookie’s status after the game. “I don’t think it’s anything crazy,” said Schottenheimer. “I don’t think it’s anything too bad.”
What will Dallas do if Blue is forced to miss some time? They might look to put Blue on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) List going into the regular season opener. The NFL Roster Cutdown Day is on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 4 p.m. Eastern.
Dallas opens its regular season on the road by playing the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Thursday, Sept. 4.
