NFL Insiders Provide Update on Jayden Daniels’ Injury Status

Washington fans held their breath on Thursday when Jayden Daniels took a hit in the fourth quarter of the Commanders’ game against the Packers. The young quarterback appeared to be rolled up on by a Green Bay defender and was seen limping afterward.

While Daniels remained in the game, speculation arose that he may have sustained an injury. Adam Schefter, ESPN’s NFL insider, recently provided an update on the quarterback.

On the “Pat McAfee Show,” Schefter noted that he doesn’t believe Daniels suffered a serious injury. He thinks the Commanders conducted some testing on him following the game, and that head coach Dan Quinn will provide a concrete update later on Monday.

“Obviously came up a little bit limpy, on Thursday night, against Green Bay,” Schefter said. “And I think they did some testing over the weekend, and I think Dan Quinn will address the media today, and we’ll see what that is. Whether his status for Sunday is in question at all? Don’t know yet. I don’t think it’s serious in any kind of way.”

It turns out Schefter was correct. Shortly after Schefter’s appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show,” NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that Daniels underwent an MRI on his knee and was diagnosed with a sprain. His status for the Commanders’ Week 3 game against the Raiders is now in question.

Daniels is considered day-to-day, and Commanders head coach Dan Quinn recently spoke about his quarterback’s situation.

“Here’s what I know — he did have an MRI and he’s already begun his return to play process with us,” Quinn said. “He is truly day to day. What does that mean for Sunday? I can’t tell you that now. I’ll share more when we get to Wednesday. But in the return to play, he and all of the guys have to hit all of the markers.”

This is a significant setback for Washington, which selected Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. In his rookie year, Daniels led the Commanders to their most wins in a season since their Super Bowl victory in 1991 and established himself as the most important player on the roster.

Washington’s offense will undoubtedly struggle if Daniels can’t play against Las Vegas. A loss to the Raiders this week would drop the Commanders to 1-2 to start the season, a difficult position for a team that entered the year with Super Bowl aspirations.

The good news for the Commanders is that this isn’t a long-term injury, and Daniels isn’t yet ruled out for the Raiders game. Still, even if he plays, a sprained knee would likely limit his mobility, which is a key part of what makes him such a dynamic player.

This is a situation to monitor as the week progresses. The Commanders face the Raiders on Sunday, September 21.
