San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings was coming off a career year in 2024, but the 2025 season has been a rocky start. He suffered a shoulder injury in Week 1 and, despite playing through it in Week 2, an ankle issue forced him to miss Week 3’s victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
With the 49ers set to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4, the big question is whether Jennings will be available.
Is Jauan Jennings Playing in Week 4?
Jennings had a contentious offseason with the 49ers. He wanted a hefty contract extension and spent most of the preseason clamoring for it. Still, that problem was ameliorated when the Niners agreed to add $3 million to the final year of his contract. However, the money did not magically heal a calf injury he had to nurse throughout training camp.
Jennings took the field in the 49ers’ season opener against the Seahawks, but suffered a shoulder injury after just two catches for 16 yards in the Niners’ 17-13 win. He still managed to suit up for the Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints and posted five receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown.
During that game, Jennings suffered an ankle injury and did not fully practice leading into Week 3, ultimately being ruled out. And according to the latest injury report, he is now listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup against the Jaguars.
However, head coach Kyle Shanahan noted on Monday that Jennings is “day-to-day”, suggesting an increased likelihood he could return in Week 4. Unfortunately, the 49ers wideout didn’t practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He returned to practice on Friday, but his status for the upcoming game is still uncertain.
In addition to Jennings, wide receiver Jordan Watkins and quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Mac Jones remain listed as questionable on the offensive side of the ball, leaving the 49ers’ game plan somewhat uncertain.
How Jennings’ Status Could Impact the 49ers’ Offense
Jennings’ role in San Francisco’s offense extends beyond the box score. His physicality, perimeter blocking, and third-down reliability help tie together the 49ers’ personnel groupings, especially in condensed formations, in-breakers off play-action, and red-zone concepts. If he’s limited or cannot go, San Francisco will adjust its receiving rotation and lean into its depth.
Kendrick Bourne is the primary receiver poised to absorb Jennings’ snaps, lining up alongside Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall. Bourne rejoined the 49ers ahead of Week 2, recording three catches for 32 yards in his return before adding four receptions for 38 yards against the Cardinals.
Veteran Marquez Valdes‑Scantling also recorded his first catch of the season against the Cardinals, a nine-yard gain. While his volume remains low, his presence as a vertical threat can still impact defensive spacing and safety depth, helping to open opportunities for the rest of the offense.
