The San Francisco 49ers’ offense is navigating a wave of injuries that could shape their season. As they prepare for a crucial Week 5 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, one major question remains unanswered: Will wide receiver Jauan Jennings be available, or will the team be forced to patch another hole in its depleted lineup?
Will Jauan Jennings Play in Week 5?
After missing Week 3 with ankle and shoulder issues, Jennings returned in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He caught two of four targets for 24 yards and even contributed on a two-point conversion drive. But that appearance came at a cost.
The wideout was evaluated on the sideline after taking a rib shot and faced uncertainty about his availability on a short week. Head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted on Monday that Jennings’ status for Thursday was still undecided, telling The Athletic’s Matt Barrows the receiver is “up-in-the-air” for the Rams game.
The uncertainty deepened after reports revealed Jennings’ frustrating experience during Sunday’s game. Following a heavy hit in the second half, he had to wait for medical attention because the staff was already attending to rookie Ricky Pearsall, who sustained a knee injury on the sideline.
NFL insider Adam Schefter confirmed that Jennings did not practice on Tuesday. “Two days before they play the Rams in LA, there will be no practice again today for 49ers QB Brock Purdy (toe), and WRs Jauan Jennings (ankle, ribs) and Ricky Pearsall (knee),” he wrote on X.
On Wednesday, the 49ers announced that Jennings was ruled out for the game against the Rams. Moreover, San Francisco will also be without Brock Purdy and Ricky Pearsall.

Jennings, already playing through previous injuries, was forced to lie on his back in pain while waiting. This wasn’t the first such instance. He faced a similar situation in Week 1 against Seattle, when he was seen waiting outside the medical tent after injuring his shoulder and knee.
The 49ers’ injury list has grown alarmingly long. George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk remain unavailable, and defensive end Nick Bosa’s absence since Week 3 has further strained the roster.
Pearsall’s knee injury also sidelines him in Week 5, which leaves Kendrick Bourne and Demarcus Robinson as the primary receiving options.
The 49ers desperately needed Jennings’ production to stabilize their passing game. When he returned from his earlier injuries, he posted 89 yards and a touchdown against New Orleans in Week 2.
Since Jennings is unavailable, the 49ers’ offense could face significant limitations against a Rams team that shares their 3-1 record.
