Here’s How the Packers Clinched a Playoff Spot on Christmas Without Playing a Snap

Green Bay secured a postseason berth for the third straight season after the rival Lions imploded with six turnovers against Minnesota.

The Green Bay Packers made the playoffs on Christmas Day. They didn’t have to do anything except watch.

Detroit’s six-turnover disaster against the Minnesota Vikings officially clinched a postseason berth for Green Bay, their third consecutive trip to the playoffs and sixth in the last seven years.

The Packers don’t play until Saturday night against Baltimore, but the Lions handled their business for them — by handing the game away in spectacular fashion.

Packers Clinch Playoff Berth Thanks to Lions’ Christmas Collapse

Green Bay entered Week 17 with a simple equation: beat the Ravens or have Detroit lose to Minnesota. The Lions took care of it before the Packers even had to lace up their cleats.

Jared Goff committed five turnovers against an already-eliminated Vikings team starting an undrafted rookie quarterback. Detroit coughed up the ball six times total after entering the game with just eight turnovers all season. Minnesota won 23-10 despite generating only three net passing yards — the fewest by any winning team since 2006.

The result drops the Lions to 8-8 and officially ends their playoff hopes. More importantly for Green Bay, it means the Packers are playing January football regardless of what happens against the Ravens.

That’s a significant relief for a team dealing with injury questions at the most important position. Jordan Love and backup Malik Willis are both listed as questionable for Saturday’s primetime matchup. Love has been battling through ailments down the stretch, and the uncertainty at quarterback made clinching via Detroit’s loss the preferred path.

Now the Packers can approach Saturday with a different mindset. A win still matters — Green Bay can keep climbing in the standings — but the desperation is gone.

What’s Next for Green Bay’s Playoff Push?

The Packers join the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, and San Francisco 49ers in the NFC playoff field. Only one spot remains, reserved for whoever wins the NFC South between Carolina and Tampa Bay.

But Green Bay isn’t just playing for seeding. The NFC North title is still within reach.
The path is narrow but real: the Packers need to win their final two games against Baltimore and Minnesota while the Bears lose to San Francisco and Detroit.

That would give Green Bay the division crown and a home playoff game at Lambeau Field — a dramatically different January than what seemed possible a few weeks ago.

Saturday’s game against the Ravens carries additional intrigue. Baltimore enters with Lamar Jackson listed as doubtful due to a back contusion, potentially setting up a battle of backup quarterbacks under the lights. The Ravens need a win to keep their own playoff hopes alive, so desperation will be on their sideline even if it’s no longer on Green Bay’s.

The Packers went one-and-done last January, falling 22-10 at Philadelphia in the wild-card round. This year’s team has shown more resilience, and clinching early gives them a chance to get healthy before the tournament begins.

For now, Green Bay can enjoy the holiday. Their rival handed them a gift they didn’t have to earn, and the Packers will happily accept it.
