James Cook Trade Destinations: 4 Best Landing Spots for the Bills Star RB Amid Tense Contract Talks

Buffalo Bills RB James Cook is facing intense contract negotiations. Here are a few destinations of where he could land in a potential trade.

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook, one of the NFL’s most productive young backs, is at the center of contract drama after skipping voluntary OTAs while seeking a lucrative extension. The 25-year-old Pro Bowler, coming off a career-best 18-touchdown season, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and reportedly wants to be paid like one of the league’s elite — around $15 million per year.

That figure would make Cook the third-highest-paid running back in the NFL.

Where Could Bills Star RB James Cook Land Amid Tense Contract Negotiations?

Bills general manager Brandon Beane has signaled that a deal is not imminent.

“I don’t see us getting something done anytime soon. We’re onto the draft. Just because we don’t get something done this year doesn’t mean we can’t get something done before he’s a free agent,” Beane said in March, suggesting that negotiations have stalled for now.

While the team is not expecting a holdout, the standoff has sparked speculation that a trade could be on the table if both sides fail to find common ground.

Should Buffalo decide to move on, here are four logical trade destinations for Cook and why each could be a fit.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears have been connected to Cook in various trade rumors, and the fit makes sense. Chicago’s backfield remains unsettled, even after the addition of rookie Kyle Monangai.

Cook’s versatility as a runner and receiver would offer a major upgrade in new offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s system — a scheme that helped unlock Jahmyr Gibbs in Detroit. A deal potentially involving D’Andre Swift could help balance salary concerns, making Cook a valuable one-year rental or long-term piece depending on how he performs in Chicago.

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are building the offense around rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and need another explosive weapon. Pairing Cook with Brian Robinson Jr. would create a balanced backfield capable of taking pressure off Daniels.

With both cap flexibility and extra draft picks, the Commanders could offer Buffalo a Day 2 or early Day 3 pick for Cook, giving the rookie QB an experienced and dynamic playmaker as the team continues its rebuild.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are still searching for answers at running back after Tony Pollard’s exit and a disappointing 2024 committee approach. Cook offers proven production and the ability to carry a full workload. In an offense led by Dak Prescott and supported by a high-powered receiving corps, Cook could become the featured back Dallas needs.

The Cowboys also have the cap space to offer Cook an extension if he becomes a long-term fit.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers, under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, are expected to take a more physical, run-heavy approach. Los Angeles drafted Omarion Hampton in Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft, but Cook’s mix of power and receiving skills fits the style Harbaugh wants in the offense.

With Justin Herbert under center and a rebuilt offensive line, the potential duo would have the opportunity to anchor a ground game in a division that features some of the NFL’s toughest defenses.

While the Bills would prefer to keep Cook under a team-friendly deal, his contract demands and the franchise’s current cap structure leave the door open for a possible trade. As mandatory minicamp approaches, the question now becomes whether Cook will dig in — or if another team will step up to land one of the NFL’s most dynamic young running backs.
