Jalen Milroe Wows With Blazing 40-Yard Dash: Comparing His Surprise Result to Lamar Jackson, Mike Vick, Other NFL QBs

Dual-threat QBs have become commonplace in the NFL. After a blazing 40-yard dash time at Alabama's Pro Day, Jalen Milroe could be next.

The NFL Draft is rapidly approaching, and as usual, the spotlight is on the quarterback position. With several teams needing a quarterback now or in the near future, Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, Jalen Milroe, and Tyler Shough will be worth monitoring.

Milroe recently performed at Alabama’s Pro Day, and one aspect of his performance caught a lot of attention.

Jalen Milroe Excels in 40-Yard Dash at Alabama’s Pro Day

Milroe reportedly ran a blazing 4.37-second 40-yard dash at his Pro Day.

With mobility becoming increasingly valuable for NFL quarterbacks, that speed is a major plus for whichever team selects him.

His time ranks among the fastest by a quarterback in NFL history. While pre-2005 NFL Combine data is inconsistent, Michael Vick holds the official record for the fastest 40-yard dash by a quarterback, running a 4.33 in 2001. Since the NFL started standardizing data in 2005, Milroe’s time trails only Reggie McNeal’s 4.35 in 2006.

In 2024, Milroe completed 64.3% of his passes for 2,844 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 13 games. But he was most dangerous on the ground, rushing 168 times for 726 yards and 20 touchdowns. In his career at Alabama, he totaled 1,577 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns.

“From a purely physical perspective, Milroe might be the most talented quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft,” said PFSN draft analyst Jacob Infante in his scouting report on Milroe.

“Milroe ultimately has a first-round skill set with fifth-round tape,” Infante added. “His value likely comes somewhere in the middle, where a team could use a Day 2 selection on him. This would bet on his tremendous ceiling without investing anything that would expect him to start right away. The boom-or-bust factor with Milroe is real, but NFL teams will always take a shot on a player with his type of raw talent.”

With Jayden Daniels’ success in 2024 and the continued dominance of dual-threat quarterbacks like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts, adding a young, mobile quarterback like Milroe in the mid-rounds could be an enticing option for teams.

Which Teams Will Be Interested in Milroe?

In PFSN’s latest seven-round mock draft, Infante predicted Milroe will be selected by the Seattle Seahawks at No. 82 overall.

“Jalen Milroe may go much higher than this because of his immense upside stemming from his strong arm and elite athleticism,” Infante said. “As an extremely unseasoned passer, though, this feels like a perfect spot for him to develop in hopes of eventually becoming the Seahawks’ post-[Sam] Darnold answer at quarterback if his 2024 season does not hold.”

Seattle had been linked to quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft due to Geno Smith’s age, but the team opted to move on from him in 2025, trading him for a third-round pick and replacing him with Darnold. While Darnold will only be 28 this season, he has just one truly successful year in the NFL. If the Seahawks aren’t satisfied with his performance, Milroe could be developed as a potential successor.

But the Seahawks aren’t the only team that could make sense for Milroe.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Milroe had dinner in Tuscaloosa with Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, general manager Omar Khan, and quarterbacks coach Tom Arth ahead of his Pro Day.

With Justin Fields now on the New York Jets and Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson as the only quarterbacks under contract, the Steelers have been linked to several potential options. Aaron Rodgers has been floated as a possibility, but there is no clear timeline for a decision on his future. Russell Wilson is also a free agent, but his situation may remain in limbo until Rodgers signs.

Until Pittsburgh settles its quarterback situation, the team will continue to be connected to multiple options. With Pelissero reporting that the Steelers met with Milroe before his Pro Day, he could be firmly on their radar.
