Jalen Coker is now eligible to return from injured reserve after missing the first four games with a quad injury, but the Carolina Panthers have not yet designated him to return. Head coach Dave Canales said Monday Coker remains “week to week,” while fellow second-year wideout Xavier Legette (hamstring) is “day to day,” putting Legette closer to game action.
What Is the Latest on Jalen Coker’s Injury?
Coker sustained a quad injury in August and was placed on IR after roster cutdowns, which made him ineligible for the first four games by rule. With that minimum now served, Carolina can open his 21-day practice window at any time. That window allows Coker to practice without immediately occupying a spot on the 53-man roster; activation can follow once the staff is satisfied with health and conditioning benchmarks.
Canales outlined the ramp criteria for both receivers. First, get the player healthy and then confirm “endurance and resilience” for “significant reps” that simulate game demands. As the coach put it, the team will “take [Legette] really day to day and still week to week with Coker” while increasing their workloads. Legette has missed two games with a hamstring injury; Coker has yet to appear this season.
Both had productive rookie campaigns in 2024, with Coker posting 32 catches for 478 yards and two touchdowns across 11 games, and Legette finishing second on the team in receiving yards.

Per reports, the Panthers can activate Coker’s practice window “as early as Monday,” and the club waived OLB DJ Johnson and WR Dalevon Campbell on Tuesday to open two spots on the 53-man roster. Those moves could facilitate an IR return once a practice window opens, although no window has been announced for Coker as of midweek. DE LaBryan Ray (ankle) is also eligible to return in Week 5.
Will Jalen Coker Play in Week 5?
Eligibility alone does not guarantee a Week 5 appearance. For Coker to play Sunday, the Panthers must first open his 21-day practice window, evaluate how he handles increased load during the week, and then make a corresponding activation to the 53-man roster. Canales’s “week to week” phrasing signals caution rather than a green light, which makes any Week 5 activation dependent on a quick window opening and clean practice response.
If the window opens promptly and Coker meets endurance and resilience benchmarks, a late-week activation is possible. If the window does not open in time or if Coker needs more time to ramp up, the more practical target is an IR return within the 21-day designation period (Weeks 6-7).
On the other hand, Legette’s “day to day” status gives Carolina a nearer-term option at receiver once his hamstring responds to game-like reps. Until either wideout is activated, the Panthers will continue with their current rotation and standard practice-squad elevations as needed.
Coker’s return is close on the calendar, but timing hinges on the practice window and health/conditioning thresholds. Week 5 is technically in play; practically, it depends on the window opening and a clean ramp this week. If that sequence doesn’t materialize, a short slide into Weeks 6-7 aligns with the team’s approach and the NFL’s IR process.
