The NFL could not have asked for a wilder opening than what went down between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. Emotions were sky-high even before a single offensive play, but nobody expected what happened next. In a flash, an on-field rivalry crossed the line, and everyone in the stadium could sense the tone shifting. Why did things boil over so fast, and who should shoulder the blame after the dust settled?
Why Did Jalen Carter Spit at Dak Prescott in Cowboys-Eagles Opener?
Everything blew up before the Cowboys even snapped the ball for their first drive. As Dallas got into formation, Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter stepped toward the Cowboys’ huddle and exchanged words with Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
Things escalated when Carter spat on Prescott, drawing an immediate flag for unsportsmanlike conduct and earning an ejection immediately.
After being ejected, Carter walked off the field and into the Eagles’ locker room, clearly frustrated as he talked to himself and shook his head. The drama did not end there, though. Another camera angle soon surfaced and questioned who truly started the incident. The new footage showed that Prescott could be construed as spitting on the ground just before Carter retaliated.
So, while the initial take was that Carter lost his cool, things got murkier with every new replay. Prescott spat on the ground, Carter took exception, and when they came face to face, Carter spat on Prescott’s jersey. Still, there is no excuse for any player to spit at or on another person. This was a classic case of the second guy getting caught– and being hit with the consequences.
It is unclear whether league officials consider the whole sequence when handing down fines or suspensions. What is certain is that Carter’s ejection dealt a huge blow to Philadelphia early. Without Carter on the line, Dallas capitalized by attacking the Eagles’ defense up the middle, punching in two rushing touchdowns on their first two possessions.
THE PLOT THICKENS.

The fallout from all of this is still up in the air. Right after the game, both Carter and now Prescott look bad. At first, fans slammed Carter for starting an ugly moment. Then, new angles made it clear the situation was at least partly retaliation.
Of course, Carter is not blameless in this entire episode. He did go up to the Cowboys’ huddle and start some jawing, which is familiar enough in a rivalry, especially during the adrenaline rush of the season opener. Some trash talk comes with the territory on opening night.
Still, Carter is likely to catch most of the heat, justified or not, since he was ejected and whose reaction got caught front and center. Opening weekend just turned chaotic, and everyone now waits to see what the NFL will do next.
