2-Time NFL All-Pro Announces He’s Stepping Away From Eagles and Contemplating Retirement

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without a two-time Pro Bowl player as he steps away from the team.

A two-time NFL All-Pro for the Philadelphia Eagles is stepping away from the game for now and seems to be taking time to consider his future.

The Eagles beat the Green Bay Packers 10-7 on “Monday Night Football,” holding their own against a tough Packers defense. Still, losing this player could impact Philadelphia’s plans.

Who on the Eagles Is Taking Time Away From the Team?

Cornerback Jaire Alexander has told the Eagles that he plans to step away at this time, according to a report by Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

According to Russini, Alexander “is stepping away from the team to focus on getting right physically and mentally.”

Philadelphia acquired Alexander in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens earlier in November. Alexander and a 2027 seventh-round pick went to the Eagles, while Philadelphia sent a 2026 sixth-round pick to Baltimore.

Alexander played his first seven seasons in the NFL with the Packers. In his career, Alexander has 12 interceptions for 201 yards and one touchdown. He was a dominant force in the Green Bay secondary and earned two Pro Bowl nominations in 2020 and 2022.

Alexander played college football at Louisville and was drafted in the first round (No. 18 overall) by Green Bay in the 2018 NFL Draft. Over three seasons at Louisville, he recorded 58 solo tackles and 19 assisted tackles, along with seven interceptions for 42 yards and no touchdowns.

This season, Alexander has seen limited playing time. The former Louisville cornerback hopes to get physically and mentally ready, then return to play later this year. The Ravens could benefit from his presence in the secondary, as Baltimore has struggled so far this season.

Looking at the Ravens’ cornerback depth chart, Nate Wiggins, Chidobe Awuzie, and Keyon Martin occupy the Nos. 1 through 3 spots. According to the PFSN’s NFL CB Impact metrics, Awuzie has an 86.5 CB Impact Score and grades out to a B.

If Alexander can get back into playing condition before this season ends, the Ravens could have significant help at the cornerback position.

However, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh will need to assess Alexander’s condition when he returns. Will he be ready to play immediately, or require time to get up to speed? Harbaugh will monitor him closely, hoping the two-time Pro Bowl star can make an impact on the field.
