Trevor Lawrence vs. Zach Wilson. Here is our pick and prediction for the Jaguars vs. Jets Week 16 contest.

The No. 1 and 2 picks from the 2021 NFL Draft face off this week for the first time in their careers. Who will come out on top? Let’s take a look at the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New York Jets Week 16 matchup, the NFL odds, and make a pick and prediction.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New York Jets pick, prediction | Week 16

  • Spread: Jets -3 (Odds provided by DraftKings Sportsbook)
  • Moneyline: Jets -145, Jaguars +125
  • Over/Under: 42.5

The Jaguars are somewhat of an unknown right now in terms of how they will respond to the firing of head coach Urban Meyer. Following Sunday’s results, the Jags now hold the No. 1 selection in the draft after a loss to the Texans and the Lions beating the Arizona Cardinals.

While that might be the optimum spot for a team looking to completely rebuild, there’s a sense of pride in at least taking down the New York Jets before they move on to face the Colts and the Patriots in their final two games of the season.

The Jets, on the other hand, have struggled to evaluate Zach Wilson effectively this season. An early-season injury to standout left tackle Mekhi Becton has caused problems for the offensive line, and Wilson himself missed four games.

Wilson has struggled at times and particularly lacks touchdown passes, managing only 6 in 2021. The Jets have a ways to go to further support Wilson and put him in a position to succeed.

There are a few things that look bright for the Jets’ future, though, including a budding connection between Wilson and fellow rookie Elijah Moore. Moore received high praise in the preseason and is emerging as one of the team’s best receiving threats.

Jaguars vs. Jets betting trends

The Jags snapped an eight-game stretch of unders on Sunday against the Texans. They lost 30-16, but they totaled enough points to cover the over. The game also marked their fifth loss in a row against the spread.

It was the first time since Week 1 that the Jags were favored to win. They lost both of those games against Houston by 14+ points, thus failing to cover the spread both times.

The Jets have been covering more unders than overs in recent weeks. Nevertheless, they hit the over against the Dolphins on Sunday, as the offense managed 24 points. That’s their highest total in the last six weeks, and while they may have lost the game, the Jets did cover the spread of 10.5.

The Jets are now 4-10 against the spread for the season and 8-6 on over/unders.

Jaguars vs. Jets prediction

The battle of the rookies is enticing, of course, but I think this one will be decided by the fact that one of these teams has a head coach in Robert Saleh. He is backed by the organization and has been working with his guys all season to win games just like this one. The other team has no head coach, a lack of proper leadership, and is just trying to survive until the end of the year.

I think the Jets win and cover while Wilson produces one of the best games of his short career. I feel for Trevor Lawrence, and the critics are starting to come for him. But circumstance is everything for a rookie quarterback, and the Jaguars need to figure it out quickly. I’ll take the under, too, because both teams are capable of choppy drives ending in punts.

Jaguars vs. Jets Prediction: Jets 27, Jaguars 14
