The Jacksonville Jaguars have taken down the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football and are now sitting with a 4-1 record through Week 5. While both teams had their moments in this game, Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars came up clutch as he scored the game-winning touchdown with just under 30 seconds remaining in the game. In a play that began in a stumble and looked like it would be a wash, Lawrence turned it into an incredible touchdown, leading his team to victory. This came after an unbelievable throw on third down to Brian Thomas Jr., who made an equally good catch to bring them into Chiefs territory.
Unfortunately for the Jaguars, however, despite coming away with a victory, they likely shouldn’t have been in this position in the first place, as multiple poor missed calls significantly altered the game’s trajectory.

Announcers Disagree With Controversial Decision to Pick Flag Up Resulting in Chiefs’ Touchdown
As the broadcast was reviewing the play, both of the announcers, Troy Aikman and Joe Buck, were saying that it was a “good offensive pass interference call,” and that it was “awfully tight.” They also went on to say that they should have stuck with the original call on the play, rather than picking the flag up.

This flag would have put the Chiefs back 15 yards, and while they still could have scored, it shouldn’t have been on that possession. Additionally, this was the first of two controversial no-calls that benefited the Chiefs, as a defensive pass interference was missed by the referees, leading to an interception for Kansas City.

The announcers disagreed with this call as well, with Joe Buck calling it a “huge miss.” ESPN’s rule analyst Russell Yurk said that it should have been called a defensive pass interference, which would not only have taken the interception away, but it would have moved the ball downfield for Jacksonville.

Thankfully for the Jaguars, they were still able to tough it out in what was an imposing victory for them. Along with playing one of the most electric teams in the league, they had to overcome some very poor officiating.
Following this loss, the Chiefs now have a 53.2% chance of making the playoffs, a decrease of 9.6 percentage points according to PFSN’s Playoff Predictor. If they missed the playoffs this season, it would be the first time they’ve done so since 2014.
