Jack White’s upcoming Detroit Lions – Green Bay Packers Thanksgiving halftime appearance arrives at a moment shaped by a personal milestone that revealed a new side of the musician.
His latest birthday created a wave of curiosity, not only for the number he reached but for the unexpected gift that came with it, inviting a closer look at the moment before he steps back into a national spotlight.
Jack White’s 50th Birthday and Its Unusual Celebration
Jack White turned 50 on July 9, 2025, marking the day with a revelation that surprised many longtime followers. The Third Man Records founder announced on Instagram that his wife, Olivia Jean, had given him the first cell phone he has ever owned.
White joked on his Instagram about the shift by writing, “Well y’all it’s either all over for me now or just the beginning”, adding that he was now “the reluctant owner of a cellular telephone for the first time in my life”.
He explained that his resistance to owning a phone had created day-to-day inconveniences, such as being unable to play his own music in his car or park in lots that required QR codes.
Reflecting on his long running goal, he wrote, “I thought if I could make it to 50 years old at least without ever having one that I could be proud of myself, and I am.” His comments offered a rare glimpse into how he views technology and personal boundaries.
White’s birthday included more than the surprise phone. He and Jean celebrated at a Detroit Tigers game alongside his mother, Teresa Gillis. There, actor and musician John C. Reilly surprised him by performing Happy Birthday on the field.
Video shared by the Tigers showed White looking shocked and slightly embarrassed by the gesture. Reilly told commentators Jason Benetti and Andy Dirks that while fans see White as a rock star, he sees him as someone who prioritizes family.
Reilly had appeared in White’s music video for “Archbishop Harold Holmes,” released in June, adding another layer to the personal connection behind the birthday moment.
This milestone arrives just as White prepares for another major appearance: the Detroit Lions announced that he will perform at halftime of the team’s Thanksgiving game against the visiting Green Bay Packers.

At 50, White enters the Thanksgiving showcase with renewed public curiosity shaped by a birthday that blended humor, family moments, and an unexpected step into modern technology.
