Photo of J.J. McCarthy Getting Honored by Bears Resurfaces Ahead of Vikings QB’s NFL Debut in Chicago

J.J. McCarthy makes his NFL debut in Chicago, returning home to face the Bears where his football journey first took flight.

For J.J. McCarthy, tonight’s Monday Night Football game at Soldier Field is more than just the start of his NFL career; it’s a homecoming. The Minnesota Vikings’ new starting quarterback is set to debut only 15 miles from where he grew up in La Grange Park, Illinois, where his football dreams first took shape.

Why Is J.J. McCarthy’s Debut Versus Chicago Special?

Long before he wore a Vikings uniform, McCarthy was the kid who lit up Friday mornings at Nazareth Academy. As a sophomore in 2018, he helped the Roadrunners capture a state championship, displaying the kind of arm strength and vision that had coaches and classmates whispering that he was special.

It was not long before Chicago sports fans noticed. The Bears named him their “High School Player of the Week” that fall, and a picture of the occasion has recently come to light.

In front of his teammates in the school cafeteria, McCarthy is depicted clutching a football with a smile that conveys the significance of the occasion. He had the ambition and work ethic to pursue it, but he wasn’t yet a Michigan Wolverine, much less an NFL quarterback.

McCarthy’s time at Nazareth was filled with highlights. He completed an incredible 76% of his passes as a sophomore, threw 39 touchdowns against only four interceptions, and finished his high school career with a 26-2 record as a starter.

After transferring to IMG Academy for his senior year, he carried that same talent and leadership to Michigan, where he cemented himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.

Full Circle for McCarthy, Ready to Pave Career with Minnesota

Now, the story feels like it’s come full circle. Drafted by the Vikings in 2024, McCarthy’s rookie year never got off the ground after a preseason knee injury sidelined him for the season.

Now entering the 2025 season, he’s ready to prove that he belongs. His first chance at that? Against the Chicago Bears, who once honored McCarthy in Soldier Field.

To McCarthy, it’s more than just a game. It’s an opportunity to perform in front of loved ones, friends, and old teammates who supported him long before he was discovered by the NFL spotlight. It also serves as a reminder of his progress from that La Grange Park cafeteria shot to being the leader of one of the NFC’s top contenders.

The Bears may be the opponent tonight, but Soldier Field is where a dream comes full circle for Chicago’s own McCarthy.
