The Kansas City Chiefs’ backfield revolves around Isiah Pacheco, and after an injury-marred 2024, fans have been watching his camp closely. The power runner, who stormed into the league as a seventh-round pick in 2022, is entering a pivotal season with the redemption-seeking Chiefs. Is he ready to roll without restriction?
What Happened to Isiah Pacheco?
Pacheco’s 2024 campaign unraveled early when he fractured his fibula in Week 2 against Cincinnati. The setback required surgery and landed him on injured reserve for much of the year. He returned later in the season but never looked like his punishing self, finishing well below the pace of his 2022 and 2023 outputs, when he logged 830 and 935 rushing yards, respectively.
At camp this summer, the updates have been far more encouraging. Reports describe Pacheco as “healthy” and even carrying added weight to help him withstand a long season. He has been a full participant in drills, showing no lingering effects from last fall’s injury.
Timeline for Isaiah Pacheco’s Potential Return
The Chiefs have yet to post an official Week 1 injury designation, but Pacheco has practiced without setbacks through August. That aligns with what observers expected. Barring a late-camp complication, he is trending toward being active when Kansas City opens the season.

Speaking after a recent practice, Pacheco framed the competition around him as a positive. “Oh, it’s phenomenal,” he said. “We got guys that you can’t depend on, as far as saying that they’re only doing one thing. You can’t say that about us. You got guys just playing all different roles, just having fun with it and just competing.”
He also reflected on how camp reps keep him sharp. “I had that similar role when I came in here,” Pacheco said of his 2022 rookie season. “It’s finding ways to get better, and that’s on the special teams, wherever it may be. Building a relationship with guys so you could learn a little bit more about them, and as far as the game itself — competing.”
Where Does He Fit in the Chiefs’ RB Room?
Kansas City has remade its backfield depth around Pacheco. Kareem Hunt re-signed on a one-year deal, Elijah Mitchell arrived in March, and rookie Brashard Smith adds a versatile weapon out of Miami.
All three have taken preseason reps, but the workload balance remains unchanged. Pacheco is the clear RB1, expected to handle early-down and goal-line work. Hunt projects as the veteran complement, Mitchell as a change-of-pace option, and Smith as a developmental piece who can contribute on special teams.

For fantasy managers and fans alike, the message is consistent. Pacheco’s offseason rehab has gone smoothly, his conditioning has impressed, and he looks ready to reclaim his workhorse role. The only caveat is procedural until the Chiefs file their official injury report before Week 1; until then, nothing is certain.
Still, the balance of evidence is clear. Barring a last-minute setback, Kansas City’s offense will once again be powered by the relentless running style of a fully healthy Pacheco.
