The Tennessee Titans are off to a rough start this season, and while struggles were expected with rookie Cam Ward under center, the offense has yet to find its rhythm. The passing game has been nearly nonexistent, leaving running back Tony Pollard to carry much of the offensive load.
Now, the Titans travel to Arizona looking to bounce back from a 0-4 start, and they’ll be counting on Tyjae Spears to bolster both the passing and running game. Spears has been sidelined for over a month on injured reserve but is now eligible to return in Week 5. The key question remains: is he healthy enough to suit up?
What Is Tyjae Spears’ Status for Week 5
Spears was placed on injured reserve on August 26, requiring him to miss at least the first four games of the regular season. The injury occurred on August 9 during Tennessee’s 29-7 preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when Spears caught a pass out of the backfield for a 13-yard gain just before halftime.
The medical evaluation confirmed a high ankle sprain, which generally demands 4-6 weeks of recovery time. However, NFL players frequently return ahead of the standard timeline, with research indicating an average return-to-play duration of 15 days despite the commonly referenced longer healing period.
Spears is now eligible to return in Week 5, with the Titans opening his 21-day practice window on Wednesday. He has been a limited participant in each practice and was listed as questionable on the final injury report.
While his questionable status means a final decision won’t be made until roughly 90 minutes before kickoff, there’s a strong possibility he suits up, even if in a limited role. This Sunday marks about eight weeks since Spears suffered the injury, which typically sidelines players for 4–6 weeks, making his return likely.
If he does play, Spears will share the backfield with Pollard, who has carried the bulk of Tennessee’s workload through the first four weeks. Given Pollard’s underwhelming output, 68 carries for 261 yards and one touchdown, Spears could see a more prominent role than he has previously had.
He was selected in the third round with the 81st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and has rushed for 765 yards and six touchdowns on 184 carries in his NFL career so far. Spears is also a reliable receiving option out of the backfield, with 82 receptions for 609 yards and two touchdowns.
This receiving ability is particularly important for the Titans, whose passing game has struggled outside of rookie Elic Ayomanor.
