What happened to Jaylen Waddle, and will he be playing in the Dolphins' Week 2 match-up versus the New England Patriots?

What’s Jaylen Waddle’s Status After His Shoulder Injury?

Midway through the disaster in Indianapolis, star receiver Jaylen Waddle left the field with a shoulder injury, sending ripples of anxiety through Miami’s fanbase. Though he returned to finish with four catches for 30 yards, the sight of Waddle on the sideline represented another potential setback for an offense that desperately needs every weapon available.

The uncertainty continued throughout the week as Waddle remained limited in Wednesday and Thursday practices, raising serious questions about his availability for a critical Week 2 divisional matchup against the New England Patriots.

Fortunately, Miami received encouraging news by Friday. Waddle returned to full practice participation and was officially removed from the injury report, clearing him to play against the Patriots. His presence gives Tua Tagovailoa a crucial target alongside Tyreek Hill as the quarterback attempts to bounce back from his nightmarish season opener.

The Patriots’ matchup carries enormous significance for Miami’s 2025 hopes. Falling to 0-2 with a divisional loss to New England would create an early hole that could prove difficult to escape in the competitive AFC East race. While the Patriots are rebuilding and may not possess their former championship-level talent, divisional games always bring heightened intensity and unpredictable outcomes.

Waddle’s confirmed availability provides the Dolphins with a much-needed boost for their home opener. After managing just 30 receiving yards on four catches in Week 1, he’ll be looking to rediscover the form that made him one of the league’s most dangerous receivers.

His career took a step backward in 2024 when he recorded just 58 catches for 744 yards despite playing 15 games, numbers well below his typical production.

How Bad Was the Dolphins’ 33-8 Loss to Indianapolis?

The Dolphins were thoroughly embarrassed in their 33-8 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts, a game where absolutely nothing clicked. The offense managed just 43 yards in the first half while Indianapolis controlled every aspect of the game.

Tagovailoa endured arguably his worst performance as a professional, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble while completing just 14 of 23 passes for 114 yards.

The defense couldn’t generate stops, allowing Daniel Jones to complete 22 of 29 passes for 272 yards and three total touchdowns in his Colts debut. Meanwhile, Miami’s rushing attack produced just 78 yards, and even their dynamic receiving duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle combined for only eight catches and 70 yards.

The lopsided defeat prompted a players-only meeting earlier in the week, with linebacker Jordyn Brooks emphasizing the need for unity after such a demoralizing performance. However, the score wasn’t the only concern coming out of Indianapolis.

The Dolphins understand that another performance like their Week 1 debacle could derail their season before it truly begins. With Waddle healthy and the team determined to prove last week was an aberration rather than a preview, Miami gets its opportunity for immediate redemption on home turf.
