It took 53 years for the New York Knicks to win a new NBA championship, which they did by beating the San Antonio Spurs. When looking at NFL franchises, are there any that draw some type of comparisons to the Knicks?
For one NFL analyst, the answer lies in one of the most iconic NFL franchises in the 1970s.
Why Albert Breer Compares the NFL’s Miami Dolphins to the New York Knicks
When Sports Illustrated senior writer Albert Breer put on his thinking cap, one team stood out in the process: the Miami Dolphins. Breer offered his comments in his latest “Albert Breer’s Takeaways” column for SI.
“Both the Knicks and Dolphins were iconic in the early 1970s, playing in venues that became legendary at multiple levels of their respective sports (Madison Square Garden and the Orange Bowl), and winning pairs of championships,” Breer wrote. “As a result, the franchises were elevated to become flagship brands for their leagues.
“In the 1980s, both drafted singular superstars who’d keep their teams contending through the rest of the millennium — Dan Marino in Miami and Patrick Ewing in New York,” Breer continued.

Breer mentioned that both the Dolphins and Knicks had “interesting blips” through a period of malaise in both franchises.
“For the Dolphins, it was the Wildcat offense leading to an AFC East crown in 2008 (that team was the only team other than the Patriots to win that division between 2003 and 2019),” Breer wrote.

“For the Knicks, it was Linsanity in 2012,” he added. “And now, the Dolphins can only hope that Malik Willis is their Jalen Brunson, as an undervalued former second-round pick coming aboard to spark their latest rebuild.”
Breer did ask a question where he proffered that his thoughts might be too far-fetched at this time. “Maybe,” he said. “But the idea that Brunson is the best player on a title team would’ve been, too, four years ago when he joined the Knicks.”
So, when was the last time that the Dolphins won a Super Bowl championship? You have to go all the way back to Super Bowl VIII on Jan. 13, 1974, at Rice Stadium in Houston. Miami running back Larry Csonka carried the ball 33 times for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns.
That makes it 52 years, entering the 2026 NFL season, since the Dolphins raised the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Well, if the Knicks can win an NBA championship this season to break a long dry spell, then what’s to keep Miami from doing the same thing?
