Super Bowl LVIII is here, and it’s expected to be a good one. The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will face off to become (or stay, in the Chiefs’ case) world champions.
This year, the Super Bowl will be on CBS, meaning Jim Nantz and Tony Romo will be on the call. How many times has Nantz announced the big game?
How Many Super Bowls Has Jim Nantz Called?
The Super Bowl is nothing new to Nantz. Super Bowl LVIII will mark the ninth championship he has worked. He’s worked six as a play-by-play announcer and two as host. On the other hand, Romo has worked two, and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson has worked four.
Nantz was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on May 18, 1959. He grew up, however, in Louisiana and New Jersey. He attended Marlboro High School in Marlboro Township, New Jersey, where he was co-captain of the basketball team and co-captain and No. 1 player on the golf team. He did not play football.
Following his high school career, he attended the University of Houston, where he played on the school’s men’s golf team. Additionally, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Radio and Television Broadcasting in 1981, starting his career shortly after.
Prior to CBS Sports, Nantz started as an anchor and sportscaster for KHOU in Houston, Texas, and a weekend sports anchor on KSL-TV in Salt Lake City in the early 1980s. He called BYU football games and Utah Jazz basketball games.
Finally, he joined CBS Sports in 1985 working as a studio host for the network’s college football and basketball coverage. He also worked as an on-course reporter for PGA Golf. Nantz moved into the lead play-by-play role on the NCAA Final Four men’s basketball finals in 1990 when Brent Musburger was ousted from CBS.
Nantz’s first NFL involvement with CBs came from 1987-1990, when he did play-by-play of NFL games on CBS Radio. He’s done play-by-play work for NFL on CBS since 2004, also having a short stint doing it from 1988 to 1993. He also was the host of The NFL Today from 1998 to 2003 and was lead play-by-play announcer of Thursday Night Football from 2014 to 2017.
In his long and legendary broadcasting career, he’s been named a two-time Sports Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Sports Personality and Play-by-Play in 2009 and 2010. He’s also been a five-time NSMA National Sportscaster of the Year in 1998, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
