Who Is the Home Team in Super Bowl 58? How It’s Determined, History, and More

Who is the home team for Super Bowl 58? Here's how the NFL determines the home and road teams in the Super Bowl and its history.

    Published on

The matchup for Super Bowl 58 is set, as the AFC’s Kansas City Chiefs will be taking on the NFC’s San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas. Although we finally know which teams will be playing in Super Bowl 58, many people are wondering who the home team will be when these two meet for the NFL‘s most prestigious prize.

Are the Chiefs or 49ers the Home Team in Super Bowl 58?

The Chiefs, as representatives of the AFC, will be the home team in this year’s Super Bowl. The home squad gets the privilege of selecting what jersey color they elect to wear for the big game, so expect to see Kansas City decked out in dark red.

On the flip side, similar to each regular and postseason contest, the road team takes care of announcing the opening coin toss prior to the start of the game.

If the outcome is tied after four quarters of play and the contest moves to overtime, the rules don’t change, meaning the road team calls the opening coin flip.

How Does the NFL Determine the Home Team in the Super Bowl?

It’s a question many are curious about, and the answer is simple.

As you all know, the Super Bowl occurs annually in February. The two participating teams, one from each respective conference, alternate between the home and road side each season.

    Yes, it’s that simple.

For example, in last year’s Super Bowl, the Chiefs as the AFC’s representative, were the road team and wore their white uniform tops. Meanwhile, the NFC’s Philadelphia Eagles dressed in their midnight green jerseys.

The location, however, is at a neutral site that is determined well before the start of that particular season. There have only been two occurrences where a team hosted the Super Bowl in their own backyard (Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2021, Los Angeles Rams 2022).

    Where Is Super Bowl 58?

Allegiant Stadium, the official home of the Las Vegas Raiders of the AFC West, is the location of Super Bowl 58. It will mark the first time Allegiant Stadium hosted football’s biggest game during the stadium’s existence since 2020.

As members of the AFC West and division rivals to the Raiders, the Chiefs are very familiar with Allegiant Stadium. On Sunday evening, Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes expressed his excitement for their upcoming trip to Sin City on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Other notable sporting events held inside the billion-dollar stadium include the Pac-12 Football Championship Game, East-West Shrine Bowl, Las Vegas Bowl, and the NFL’s Pro Bowl.
