The 2025 NFL Draft is the talk of the town. Day 1 wrapped up with some surprising trades, and several top prospects have found the teams where their NFL careers will begin.
So far, 32 players have a new home. The rest will find out their fate on Day 2 or Day 3. Here’s a breakdown of how the NFL Draft works:
How Long Does the NFL Draft Last?
The NFL Draft is a three-day event with seven rounds held from Thursday to Saturday each spring. The 2025 NFL Draft takes place from April 24 to April 26.
In the NFL Draft, Thursdays are reserved for Round 1, Fridays for Rounds 2 and 3, and Saturdays wrap up the mega-event with Rounds 4-7. All 32 teams have 10 minutes to decide their pick in Round 1. In Round 2, the selection time drops to seven minutes for each pick, down to five minutes for regular or compensatory picks in Rounds 3-6, and then again to four minutes for Round 7.
That clock includes the time it takes to deliver the pick. Each team has reps at the draft site who stay in contact with the team’s front office. Once a decision is made, the pick is relayed to the team’s table in Selection Square.
There, a rep writes the player’s name, position, and school on a card and hands it to an NFL runner. The pick becomes official when the runner submits the card, and the next team’s clock starts.
If a team misses its window, it can still make a pick, but it risks losing out on its target if the next team acts fast.
