Cam Ward Shows Flashes of Brilliance While Titans Offense Struggles

Ward completed two of seven passes for 42 yards in his three series of action. The stat line is deceiving, though, as he made some nice throws that didn’t quite connect with his receivers. With his top receiver, Calvin Ridley, not playing, Ward had to depend on other targets to help move the offense.

Ward started off the day with a very nice play to WR Elic Ayomanor. Backed up on his own 10-yard line, Ward rolled out to his right and delivered a ball on the move to the fellow rookie to pick up a huge 35-yard gain.

Ward made it look easy on the throw, helping them get out of bad field position, but the drive stalled on the following set of downs.

This was only one of two completed passes for Ward on the night. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows after he completed his first pass. He struggled to complete passes at a high percentage which will be concerning if it continues as a trend, but with the flashes he showed, Titans fans can breathe for now.

Ward looked Ayomanor’s way a few times throughout the night. While only linking up for that one catch, the pair seems to be looking to find each other quite often. The receiver from Stanford is developing some chemistry with Ward, as the Titans need receivers to step up and prove themselves opposite Ridley.

Ward’s best throw of the day fell incomplete on a beautiful throw over three defenders to Van Jefferson. He stayed strong in the pocket and delivered a strike mixed with both velocity and touch to get it over the defenders before Jefferson dropped the ball.

This caught the eye of former NFL QB Chase Daniel, who acknowledged the great throw from Ward even though it won’t show up in the box score. “This throw won’t be in the stats…but holy hell Cam Ward,” said Daniel.

Daniel wasn’t the only one impressed with the throw from Ward. Another analyst, Warren Sharp, praised the perfect placement of the throw.

“ok THIS is outrageous from Cam Ward, perfect placement,” said Sharp.

Throws like this one are the encouraging signs that the Titans and their fans will be looking for. These are special throws that will help Ward be very successful in the NFL.

Overall, it was a tough performance for the Titans’ offense, scoring no points in Ward’s three series, but the rookie quarterback let his arm talent show on multiple occasions. Getting Ward the reps is the point of these drives and preparing him for the drives that really matter when Week 1 arrives.
