‘He’s Just Becoming a Bit of a Pain’ — Patriots Reporter Rips Stefon Diggs After Star WR’s Cryptic Comments

Patriots reporter Phil Perry took a dig at WR Stefon Diggs after Diggs' cryptic comments revealed his status for Week 1 could be up in the air.

The Patriots made a splash this offseason to get their franchise quarterback Drake Maye a proven wide receiver to help him develop into the star they are hoping for. But coming off a torn ACL last year, Diggs has to be careful managing his return. Diggs was unsure of his status for Week 1, even though he’s been an active participant in practice during training camp.

A Patriots reporter ripped into Diggs for his cryptic comments and his early behavior with New England.

Patriots Reporter Takes a Shot at Stefon Diggs

Diggs was noncommittal on a potential Week 1 return to action. Diggs is taking it one day at a time and one practice at a time. But these cryptic comments caught the eye of the media, though.

Patriots reporter Phil Perry was critical of Diggs’ behavior so far with the Patriots after his comments surrounding his Week 1 status. Perry is spotting little cracks in the potential relationship between the Patriots and Diggs.

“There are little signs that he’s just becoming a bit of a pain in the posterior,” said Perry on Diggs.

Diggs has a big role to play in the Patriots offense and they can’t afford having him cause trouble within the organization. Head coach Mike Vrabel downplayed Diggs’ comments on his Week 1 status, pointing to the fact that he has been active in training camp and showing flashes of him returning to top form.

Perry isn’t convinced that Diggs will get back to the high level that he displayed playing with the Minnesota Vikings or the Buffalo Bills. Perry ripped into Diggs for the other narratives surrounding him and how his potential performance might not outweigh the downsides of these distractions.

“It all sort of adds up to, there’s a lot going on with this guy for a guy who doesn’t look like a No. 1 receiver anymore,” said Perry.

Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract that can reach $69 million, with only $26 million guaranteed. Banking on the potential return to top receiver status, the Patriots splashed the cash on Diggs. Maye needed a trusted receiver after having one of the worst receiving corps last season. New England is hoping that Diggs can be just that.

From the cryptic comments to the boating incident earlier in the offseason, Diggs has found himself at the forefront of media attention in New England. Diggs’ behavior cannot be a distraction for the Patriots as they look to reassert themselves as a threat in the AFC. Looking to right a rocky ship, the Patriots will be relying on Diggs to give them their money’s worth to help propel the offense to the next level.
